The national debate over the Confederate flag has now turned toward Scarlett OHara.
New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick said Wednesday that Americans should think about relegating the 1939 classic Gone with Wind to a museum.
If the Confederate flag is finally going to be consigned to museums as an ugly symbol of racism, what about the beloved film offering the most iconic glimpse of that flag in American culture? Mr. Lumenick asked. Im talking, of course, about Gone with the Wind, which won a then-record eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1939, and still ranks as the all-time North American box-office champ with $1.6 billion worth of tickets sold here when adjusted for inflation.
The movie, which starred Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, sends the wrong cultural message because it stands for many of the same things as the Confederate flag waving before the movies intermission, Mr. Lumenick said.

Interesting that you should bring this up in another thread.
Lou Lumenick should be consigned to a nuthouse.
will TCM bow to the pressure and stop airing Gone With the Wind?
Does the late Hattie Mcdaniel, the FIRST black to win an Academy Award in the acting category STILL get credit for her Oscar??...or was it racist to award it to her for her outstanding performance...
Just wait til the next big Terrorist attack—all the CSA flag stuff will look rather silly when the airwaves are filled with body bags full of Americans of all color. What will people talk about when a US Carrier is filmed rolling over and taking her crew the the bottom of the sea—and front pages are filled with the names of the dead. Then the “Hateful” flag controversy will be seen for what it is —a made up crisis to ensure black/Liberal votes. Wait til we have a real crisis and the enemy is at the gates (via Mexico and her Cartel/Government).
” After all... tomorrow is another day.”
Damn Yankees can march down here and just try and pry it from our hands.
Only a damned fool would try to come between legions of Southern women and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler.
“That doesnt make sense, people dont go to museums to watch movies.”
And most do not go to the Washington Times for the news.
“will TCM bow to the pressure and stop airing Gone With the Wind?’
I doubt it. Mr turner is a flake but he’s still in the business of making money.
Isn’t it ironic that the people that want to erase or re-write history always have something to hide about their own ideology and principles.
And most do not go to the Washington Times for the news
_______________
why not? Conservative dailies are good things.
Better burn all known copies of “Birth of a Nation”, too.
I watched the entire film a year ago. Yes, sympathetic to the Confederacy but it also made the point that Lincoln sought reconciliation over revenge and had he not been assassinated, Reconstruction would have been far milder for the South.
The Potato Famine that struck Ireland in the 1848s was a far greater catastrophe than the black slaves of the United States ever suffered. Millions died, millions more were forced into exile. It was as bad as what happened in the Ukraine under Stalin. I dare say that the average American is ignorant of either event. or to limit our purview to Africans, American blacked suffered nothing like those who live din the Belgium Congo in the United States. History provides us with many, many more examples, yet.somehow, black slavery in there United State gets all this attention.
Chilling visual.
Spot on.
