Jefferson's owning a koran may have very well been a case of "Know your enemy". The muslims were instrumental in the founding of the US Marine Corps after all.

My understanding is the nature of the rebellions against the crown are entirely different. In Spanish colonies it was carried out by the upper middle class against the control of Spain, but the lower classes were not permitted to have any part or benefits from those revolutions.
