As a 'damn Yankee' -- that is, a Northerner who came to the South and didn't leave -- the Confederate Flag has never really held meaning for me. I understood that for most who displayed it, it meant a reverence for the heritage of the South and expressed the rebellious spirit I so often find, and admire, here.
Then the events of the shooting in South Carolina played out. Dylann Root was found to have embraced that flag, but for different and objectionable reasons of true racism.
The hysteria that followed was terrifying to watch. Both Democrats and Republicans, media and corporations, all jumped aboard a fevered bandwagon that cast aside rationality for a false emotional response. Apple corporation, for example, banned all Civil War games in their app store. Utterly absurd.
The media breathlessly reported every banning, discontinuation, removal from state grounds, and whipped the masses up as well as they could.
The masses were unresponsive. I saw no turning of opinion, and there was no grassroots groundswell for this Southern cultural cleansing, this was a manufactured hysteria and the classic definition of overreaction, but it was at the organizational level. That, my friends, is censorship.
So the Confederate Flag now has a new meaning for this New York-born Southerner:
I ever get back into the model hiring game again, I will ask for something similar.
Ditto
Finally, it means I shall never surrender.
And THAT is what the heart of Dixie is about. Nice post - thanks.
I have taken down my U.S. flag and now fly my state flag.
Not Guilty.
The swimsuit neither.
You ought to become a professional author, kid. You write very well. Seriously.
Agreed.
I keep writing and hope someone important notices me. :) I don’t know how to break into the business, and would it pay as well as my technical web-developers job?
I agree with your post. Please put me on your pinglist.
Well written!
I am going to fly the Gadsden this week.
HEY!...I “LOVE” that flag...The SC just ruled on it.....U gonna tell me i cant display her now???
Marvelously expressed.
Personally, I grew up with the flag, as its imagery was a part of my school years, and always had a soft spot for it. It was incorporated onto the covers of each of my school yearbooks, and our mascot was a comical, mustachioed, old-timer Confederate soldier in uniform. Never encountered anything remotely negative said about the Confederate flag until well into adulthood.
With the hysterical insanity and the GOP cowardice of this past week, the symbol of the Flag has grown a hundredfold for me. It brought back memories of the pride (and a certain rebeliousness) that it used to represent to me. A symbol and a meaning that had been fairly dormant in me for a long time.
Looking at what has become of this country now, there is just no way I can bring myself to fly the American flag anymore. The final nail was driven through the heart of my country this week, and I no longer look at it the same way. It’s like living in occupied territory, and it’s now the old Confederate flag seemingly the only thing left to represent me.
Did you really expect the MSM to let this go without attempting to incite riots complete with a ratings bonanza? The story is too boring with a bunch of forgiving Christians at it’s core. Besides, they can’t allow God a win. Must distract the masses from that story.
The square ones are commonly used as bandanas :)
Do you think obama will make up a law so you cant burn the
fag flag? It’s ok to burn the American Flag. Buy a bunch of fag flags and have a nice bonfire.Everyday.
For anyone interested- this website offers Confederate Battle Flag merchandise, looks very reasonable. It’s Ben “Cooter” Jones site (of Dukes of Hazzard”). I have no association with the site, and have never used it.

Well said. This uproar has nothing to do with the flag. It is hatred - - pure and simple— of all things Southern. We are not racists. We just don’t like Government’s boot on our neck. Please add me to your ping list.
My state, now country, is Texas.
Well said, you are now an official Southerner. And the usual mob of South-haters will welcome you with a sea of venom.
