After Gay Marriage Decision, Mississippi May Stop Issuing All Marriage Licenses
Newsweek ^ | June 26, 2015 | Polly Mosendz

Mississippi is considering pulling the plug on issuing marriage licenses altogether after the Supreme Court struck down bans on gay marriage Friday morning.

As the state's governor and lieutenant governor condemned the court's decision, state House Judiciary Chairman Andy Gipson began studying ways to prevent gay marriage in Mississippi. Governor Phil Bryant said he would do all he can "to protect and defend the religious freedoms of Mississippi." To Bryant's point of doing "all" the state could do, Gipson, who is a Baptist minister, suggested removing marriage licenses entirely.

I didn’t ask you if you knew where your/city hall’s paperwork was, I asked “”Would you destroy all records and evidence of your marriage right now?”” meaning all proof of your marriage in the sense of proving it legal, if you could?

Second, do you really think that states are going to cease recognizing marriage, or certifying that their citizens are legally married? And that people will tolerate that?

Third, what 50 year old marriage thing in the Army, are you talking about?

Yep. And churches that want to keep that wall of separation have an easy step: don’t have their pastors become licensed to wed. And thus they have no ability to even make legal marriages. And any members who want the ceremony to tie to the legal document just need to include a JP on their invite list. It’s only a crisis who don’t get that it’s 2 different things.

They won’t do it because it will impact jobs of some government employees.

There is no current advantage of filing a joint income tax return if you file the standard form...

Huh? There's a definite advantage to filing a joint tax return if only one spouse has income.

Not true... Even into the twentieth century marriage licenses were not required in most states.

Exactly. Many marriages were not as such even done {at the time a couple married} in a church by clergy due to availability. A couple { as man and woman} took their vows of marriage to each other in the presence of GOD and became man and wife. A Bible entry of marriage, births, and deaths, was as much a valid record of those events as any state issued writs of today. That has been true even in my lifetime. Family Bibles were considered legal entries.

Both times I've married, my bride to be and I went before Clergy to take our vows after a brief stop at a county clerk's office to pay the state a licensing fee for a state certificate. IOW the county clerk had no authority to marry anyone. The paper meant nothing to us as it was a state license thus revokable by the state. It was the vows we took before GOD which meant everything to us and in both marriages fulfilled them both times. The states paper got filed away in some obscure place in the home hunted for only when state or some business usually insurers demanded a state issued writ as proof.

IF or when GOD ever blesses me a third time with a wife and I meet someone to marry the state will not be involved in that process. At this point in my life all legal issues can be done via civil documents to appease the ambulance chasers oligarchy etc. I do not wish to defile such sacred event with a states writ of marriage that the USSC turned had now into a license for an abomination.

BTW a marriage license the Homosexuals say is a must have for any say in their other pervert partner's health decisions is pure B.S. I made medical decisions for my wife many times including the last one to be made and was never asked at any time to see our license. No I did not have medical POA either.

The church marriage document merely gets recorded in the public records. No big deal.

Then what has Mississippi accomplished? Plenty of churches perform same-sex marriages.

I totally get the distinction. I’m just saying let’s hustle a little bit and try to outfox leviathan for a change.

They get married in a church and then go to another state to get a license.

As matter of fact, we may need Federal licenses for marriages.

as a practical matter, the civil side of marriage is important in today's world.

If the laws of God are so unimportant to someone that they're secondary to the laws of man, I have to doubt the sincerity of that person's religious beliefs.

Personally, if I were a Christian minister I would reluctantly break man's unbiblical law and go to prison rather than to obey an unbiblical law enacted by a liberal anti-Christian judge, justice, or court simply by judicial fiat. The bible commands us to obey government's laws whether or not we agree with them, but not if the law in question is itself in violation of God's higher law, as were Roman laws against the propagation of Christianity.

Millions of Americans want to be legally married as part of their employment for the federal government, including our GIs.

Who said that? a person who wants a legal marriage, is not going against his Christian beliefs.

Plymouth Colony - before the USA even existed

marriage was a civil affair for the Puritans or whatever that group was. The church had nothing to do with marriage. It was just part of society, something totally normal and not religious at all.

In a place where going to church was pretty close to mandatory!

“Many tax laws specifically refer to spouse.”

So you have to redefine what that word means. I’ve done real estate deals my entire life with my wife, and no one has ever asked either of us to prove we were legally married! If it is needed, there are many ways to legally define a relationship without the need for a marriage license. Even the old requirement for VD testing as a condition have fallen by the wayside.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer the marriage license as a convenience, but not if it give the Feral Government any additional tools to hamper my rights.

“The Gay crowd might not end up liking that. “

Yeah, Gay Divorce is already with us and from the couple of instances I’ve read about, when a couple of Sodomites decide to split up, it’s a real donnybrook. I mean exactly who does get the vibrator and the dildoe?

“LEFTISTS will celebrate their first real victory when that happens. The destruction of civil marriage has been the real goal.”

Then why haven’t the states that have been absolutely dominated by leftists for decades simply just do this years ago? Civil marriage is just as destructible there. Why are the absolutely most conservative states like Alabama, Oklahoma, and Mississippi the ones thinking about doing this?

“Would you destroy all records and evidence of your marriage right now? “

No because this whole issue doesn't really affect my marriage. This is a problem for churches, and businesses who don't want to be drawn into this mess. BTW, just what did the Army require as evidence of your marriage?
And since marriage is one of those rights guaranteed by the Constitution, why should there be any government involvement at all? What we are going to see now is that a First Amendment right is going to start being treated like the Second Amendment, whereas both should be totally outside the purview of the Government at all.
