This is a gutless fallback position. He'll "try to protect our religious liberties" instead of nullifying this illegal SCOTUS decision in Texas.

This will certainly help the momentum of the Republic of Texas people. Abbott and AG Paxton have proven themselves to be weaklings - not the staunch conservatives we expected.

What do you want them to do, defy the Supreme Court?

instead of nullifying this illegal SCOTUS decision

We don't want a Governor who pretends he is king. I don't want Abbott to claim power he does not have to try and overturn this ruling.

How will they enforce the law - have federal marshals standing at each courthouse? This might be interesting time for civil disobedience. If the government going to arrest people for refusing to marry queers?

Sorry, but I don't see the problem.

Abbott is simply signaling that pastors, ministers, etc. won't be required to perform a same-sex marriage.

A state official (judge, justice of the peace, etc.) with the authority to perform a civil ceremony probably won't have the choice: they are representatives of the state government, and shouldn't be allowed to defy the Court for personal reasons.

“What do you want them to do, defy the Supreme Court?”

It’s got to start somewhere, Texas seems logical.

The Governor has no power to nullify a SCOTUS decision. Talk to the state Attorney General about that.

At that time even people who didn’t think the feds were right still believed in the system and country. I don’t think the same can be said today and I think disobedience from the states is warranted.

Yes. Maybe it will lead to a dozen or more states doing the same, which will make people in general cognizant of the fact that there are limits on the federal government's power.

What would YOU have us do, kneel to Sauron?

Ever hear of the 10th Amendment? Arguably, the federal government has no business dealing with ANY aspect of marriage, which has been a matter of state law since the Constitution was ratified. All that nullifying the ruling would do is to signal that the State of Texas (and any others that care to join) believes that the Feds have (yet again) overstepped their authority.

In Texas, the Governor has little actual power. All of our state-wide officials are elected, IOW the “Cabinet” isn’t run by the Governor.

Why not abolish civil “marriage” for all. If you want the state to recognize marriage for federal tax purposes then have partners file a contract with the state and leave marriage to individual churches/temples/mosques.

Why does everyone think Abbott should be Davy Crockett of 2015, sacrifice himself AND HIS STATE to make a statement that every other governor is too chicken to make.

Abbott has fought the federal gov’t since he took office but news flash, he can’t do it alone.
