LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - Speaking to reporters in Washington Tuesday, Sen. Harry Reid called on Nevada higher education officials to consider changing the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' mascot and sports nickname.
The statements came after a shooting in South Carolina that claimed nine lives sparked debate about displays of the Confederacy.
On the campus of UNLV Tuesday, it was difficult to find anyone who believes the mascot, Hey Reb!, should be changed.
What happened over there is a tragedy of course, but what's happening here on campus is what's happening on campus. Go Rebels, student Billy Watts said.
I don't think their mascot has anything to do with the tragedy that's going on in South Carolina or anything like that. People are taking this stuff to a new level it doesn't need to go to, student Amanda Spang said.
Tony Allen, with UNLV's Office of Media Relations, on Tuesday issued the following statement:
UNLV's current mascot, Hey Reb!, was created in 1982 by late local artist Mike Miller and was inspired by western trailblazers of the 1800s. It was intended to be reflective of western independence and spirit and has become one of the most beloved mascots in college athletics."

this is satire- correct?
lets start with the Dixie Chicks...
Too bad this is not the 18-1900’s, there are just no other places to go.
Actually, we should ban that actress from appearing before any operable video recording device.
“This liberal singing group should change its name”
Chicks with d*@$s...is that acceptable now.
RE: this is satire- correct?
I wish it were, but it is true as true can be. This country and its government is turning into a complete satire of itself and we’re VOTING for these living satires.
The hysteria is spreading. Just see the same news being reported elsewhere:

David Bowie and James Dean will now be outlawed in Nevada
RE: Chicks with d*@$s...is that acceptable now.
If Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner approves...
Opened his big stupid mouth before he got hoist by his own petard.
Blackeye Bitches?
Hey Weed, er Reid: Rebels, like in the Confederates you are alluding to, DID NOT RUN. So, there is no connection.
There are “Rebels” in Star Wars as well. I think that should be banned as well.
...And what about that James Dean move “Rebel without a Cause”.....everyone knows that movie is racist as well.
Harry would probably be quite happy with “Buggering Sodomites” ...
Somebody please crucify this SOB already.
Name in “Pitch Perfect” is “Fat Amy”; name used in movie credits is “Rebel” Wilson.
The Fighting Whites (alternatively identified as Fightin' Whites, Fighting Whities, or Fightin' Whities) were an intramural basketball team formed at the University of Northern Colorado in 2002 and named in response to the Native American mascot controversy.[1]
The intramural college team briefly attracted a storm of national attention because of its satirical protest about stereotypes of Native Americans being used as sports mascots, particularly the "Fightin' Reds" of Eaton High School in Eaton, Colorado, not far from the university in Greeley. The Reds' mascot has been described as "a caricature Indian with a misshapen nose, [wearing] a loincloth and eagle feather".[2]
The intramural team, which included players of Native American, white, and Latino ancestry,[3][4] adopted the name "Fighting Whites", with an accompanying logo of a stereotypical "white man" in a suit,[5] styled after advertising art of the 1950s, as their team mascot. The character has been described as a man from the Ozzie Nelson era[6] or a "Father Knows Best white American male".[7]
At first, the team's T-shirts used "Fightin' Whites" as the name of the team, but various media reports referred to the team as the "Whities" instead of "Whites".[8] The plan to insult whites in the same way the minority students perceived Native Americans being insulted backfired on the group when the team's popularity skyrocketed. In response to customer demand, the team eventually began selling shirts under both names. The team added the phrase "Fighting the use of Native American stereotypes" to its merchandise to discourage the shirts from being worn by white supremacists, and arranged for CafePress.com to handle manufacturing and sales of the clothing.[9]
The team sold enough shirts that they were eventually able to endow a sizeable scholarship fund for Native American students at Northern Colorado. In 2003, the team donated $100,000 to the University of Northern Colorado's UNC Foundation, which included $79,000 designated for the "Fightin' Whites Minority Scholarship".[
