I hate using ATMs. Its not the lines that bother me, nor is it the inevitable awkwardness of the person lurking behind you, seemingly in a rush and looking over your shoulder as you type. No, I hate ATMs because I know when I swipe my card, when the machine dispenses pieces of my livelihood, I have to see that face. His face. On the $20 bill.
When historian David Greenberg thinks of Andrew Jackson, he thinks of democracy. When I see Andrew Jackson, I think of my grandmothers spit.

The trip was long. And for an eleven-year-old, somewhat painful. Wedged in the backseat between my younger sisters and their respective mountains of Barbies, the eight hour drive felt like an insufferable eternity.
Girls, my fathers voice would boom every time our incessant complaining crossed his fatherly-defined threshold: Quiet. We are going to visit the grave of a president.
When we finally arrived, I jumped out of our minivan and began exploring. But when I caught a glimpse of my grandma, my legs came to a standstill.
I watched as my grandma walked straight to the presidents grave. She stood for half a second, then her neck arched back, her body heaved forward, and for the first time in my life, I saw my grandma spit. It wasnt a casual spit. It was a once in a lifetime spit. I watched as the saliva of our ancestors flowed through her mouth and hit that grave with an echo that turned heads and stopped conversations.
She turned and walked straight back to the minivan. Lets go. And so we left....

Did the American Indians have railroads? Did they have cannons? repeating rifles? Did they have steam engines? microscopes? weaving machines? Those were the things they faced in the 19th century when their culture was competing with American/Western culture. My point, which you ignore, is that old or primitive cultures will always be eliminated by more advanced ones. Do American Indians today drive cars? use computers? Take antibiotics? Watch television? They themselves are part of the process. In America today, we are taught in 2nd grade that everyone is valuable and everyone gets a prize. Sorry, but history and evolution do not teach this.
Try Reading. You might learn something.
But then again, that might be another class you missed out on.
What good are cannons and computers when you have no food to eat. You totally ignore the contributions Native Cultures have made to agriculture, medicine, and architecture, to name just a few.
When the corn blight wiped out the “White Man’s Corn” it was back to the Native Americans of the Southwest that the U.S. Bureau of Agriculture appealed. The “dumb, stupid, backwoods injuns” had a disease resistant corn. Guess what! They saved our corn fields.
They were also capable of gowing corn where white men failed. WHY? Because they paid attention to where the rains and snows drained off the cliffs and peaks and planted accordingly and deep into the earth. THEY created and understood and were the forerunners of “irrigation systems.”
HOW did the cliff dwellers engineer to the final degree the placement of support beams in order to allow the construction of high-rise dwellings that existed and still exist for over a thousand years. They also understood the principles of cantilever balconies and other support systems.
They originated creosote treatments of wood to prevent rot as well as perfecting a “glue” that was the forerunner of “Superglue” only they had it a thousand years ago.
The Cherokee could not go to war without permission of the “War Woman.” A member of the tribal council who was the ONLY person capable of declaring war! A woman in such an important place on a tribal council....oh my....the world is going to end. (sarc.)
Next time you take an aspirin remember the “Indians’ used it ages ago for the very same reasons you do!
Besides the fact that the Plymouth Colony would all have died without the help they received from the natives, there are hundreds of examples off why your arrogant idea that they were an inferior people is HOGWASH!
Replace him with Reagan.
Same difference.
Hamilton was most definitely a Federalist. He believed in a very strong central government. He was the country’s first Treasury Secretary, and had a class of USCG cutters (formerly known as Revenue Cutters) named after him. Probably my least favorite founder. Brave guy in the Revolution, though; I’ll give him that.
>> Jackson defied the Supreme Court and marched the five civilized tribes of the southeast at gun point to what is now Oklahoma <<
Read your NE Mississippi history (Treaty of Pontotoc, etc.), and you’ll learn that the Chickasaw didn’t leave at gunpoint. They negotiated a much better deal with the USG than did the other “civilized” tribes, and they departed MS and TN under peaceful conditions.
(It’s true, to be sure, that many of them didn’t want to leave the bucolic environs of Pontotoc and Tupelo. But at least they never suffered the “trail of tears” tragedy that befell the Cherokee.)
I LIKE the way you think but watch out, some here will start calling you looney, “the world can’t work on X tonnes of gold currently available”, or “that $20 paper is REALLY ‘worth’ the same as that $20 gold piece”....yadda yadda
Next you’ll be spouting off about that Constitution thingy and possible barred /s
>> There were no Republicans in 1804 <<
Wrong. Jefferson and Madison called their party “Republican.” But Andrew Jackson’s folks changed the name to “Democratic.”
And in between, the party was sometimes called the Democratic Republicans.
But Hamilton definitely was not with them. His party was the Federalists.
Fair enough to say that there were still no Republicans in 1804 in the modern sense. Jeffersonian Republicans were more dedicated to republicanism FWICS.
Make your crap up somewhere else.
Yes, I’m sure they don’t have the foggiest clue. So keep it under your hat.
The author's grandfather would not have subjected his family to such trauma. This is a tall tale, a fib, a lie, a fabrication, a story...whatever you want to call it...the event almost assuredly did not happen as described.
I got it. Mary Kathryn Nagle.
Jackson reduce the national debt to $0. Of course libs cannot stand him.
