Anne Nicol Gaylor, one of the founders of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, died Sunday.
Gaylor, 88, formed the group with her daughter Annie Laurie Gaylor in 1976 in Madison and is credited with expanding the small group to a large national association of atheists and agnostics while serving as its president from 1978 to 2004.
The foundation often courted controversy and filed lawsuits challenging religion in schools, government and social programs.
She died at a Fitchburg hospice after she was hospitalized May 30 following a fall at her Madison apartment, according to a news release posted Monday on the Freedom From Religion Foundation website.

I’m sure that she will be justly rewarded for her efforts.
And the final score: God 1, Anne 0.
I’m not pious. If the person is a heathen (a Christian term for a non-believer), there is nothing joyful about their death. Since you use the term “heathen,” I assume you are a Christian. Finally, I don’t know what Christ does, but I do know what He taught as recorded in the Bible, and His life is the example for Christians, i.e. WWJD. Since I’m a Christian, a heathen death saddens me.
Non prayers to her family... GOD be gentle with her...
I am puzzled by your response. And please believe me when I say I am not trying to be contentious.
This person wasn’t a simple benign non-believer. She was actively hostile to, and antagonistic toward, Christianity.
So, I rejoice in her passing.
If there is a flicker in the twilight tonight it may be her realizing her life was a mistake.
I am not a fan of the current view of our God as a feminized kinder and gentler God.
I much prefer the idea that he is stern, demanding, and vengeful.
I personally think he is pissed at all of us.
Prayers for this misguided soul.
If she repented after she took her last dying breath,
(which I hope she did),
then God still wins.

[Ezekiel 18:29] Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
[30] Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
[31] Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
[32] For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
How do you know what he knows? I happen to know with certainty that HE doesn’t celebrate the death of the wicked because His Word plainly says as much. A Christian should pity the lost, particularly when they die. If not for the grace of God, I know I would be right there with them.
Scripture declares plainly “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked...”
For the last time. I didn’t say HE celebrates.
I do. I think the heathen is in for a nasty surprise.
Because HE celebrates the end of her dismal life? No! Because she is going to find out she lived a farce all of her life.
These people are pests. I’m surprised so many of you put up with their crap.
A-fricken’-men, preach it, bro
“I hope she says hi to Madalyn Murray OHair.”
And Bishop Pike.
May God forgive her and have mercy on her.
Thanks.
I get frustrated sometimes and find myself at a loss for words.
Psalm 58:9-11:
Before your pots can feel the fire of thorns He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike. The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. And men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on earth!”
Deuteronomy Chapter 32 (selections) “The Song of Moses”
Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.
Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?....
They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not....
For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains...
For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.
And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun....
I do.
So in other words, you celebrate something in which God takes "no pleasure"?
“Is it me, or is it warm down here?”
Presumably the Freedom from Religion Foundation exists for such a purpose. ;)
May she receive the full measure of His justice.
