If Rachel Dolezal Duped Us Into Believing She's Black, Blame Ourselves
Los Angeles Times ^ | 6/13 | Frederik DeBoer

I's hard to think of a more bizarre story, or one more representative of contemporary America, than that of Rachel Dolezal. Dolezal is an academic and activist who represented herself as African American for many years, earning a degree in Africana studies, even ascending to the position of president of the Spokane, Wash., chapter of the NAACP.

As police killings show, the African American community needs more change As police killings show, the African American community needs more change Dolezal's parents, however, have recently made matters uncomfortable for her, telling the media that she is in fact Caucasian and showing photos of her as a younger woman with blond hair and blue eyes. The NAACP is standing behind Dolezal, stressing that “racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying criteria for NAACP leadership.” But there are additional questions regarding, among other things, her position on a local police council. When applying to the Spokane police ombudsman commission, she indicated a racial category of black, which if untrue would violate the city ethics code.

Dolezal, for her part, acknowledged that her biological parents are two self-identified Caucasians, but has thus far refused to elaborate.

The story has predictably been catnip to our pundit class, provoking commentary ranging from the outraged to the sympathetic to the amused. Almost everyone, however, has been shocked — shocked that someone would act this way and shocked that someone could pull it off. I am shocked that people are shocked. Rachel Dolezal was inevitable. We made her.

For decades, now, the Libs have been telling us that "race" is a mere "social construct" with "no basis in biological reality"... That there are "no inherent differences between the races"... That, e.g., Eskimos or Japanese are not innately worse heavy-weight boxers than people of Negro extraction... That "differing outcomes" in, e.g., high school graduation rates between the various races must be due to the "racist" grading practices of the teachers or to "racist" curricula... That admission tests (measuring physical stamina and mental acuity) for, e.g., firefighters that happen to yield "disparate results" must be covertly "racist" or "sexist", and should therefore be "tweaked," even if, as a result, we get firefighters who can't run up a ladder without suffering dizzy spells or carry a 200-lb. unconscious person down the ladder without collapsing... Even if we get high school graduates who can't read or write "cursive"... Or Affirmative Action rocket scientists who don't know the difference between and hydrazine and a hole in the ground...

Regards,

She missed her calling. The world needs good fantasy writers. Just not in politics.

I had a classmate who was 1/16 or 1/32 native american...he wasn’t even sure himself. But somehow he ended up on some list and was actually starting to get annoyed with all the stuff he got in the mail for college scholarships etc

"It should not surprise us, then, when an individual chooses to create a different racial identity for herself. I'm not saying that's a legitimate reading of social construct arguments. I'm not saying I condone her behavior; like most people, I find it offensive. I'm simply saying that this behavior is inevitable given the current social and linguistic codes of the worlds in which Dolezal lives. We created those incentives and so we've created this behavior."

The incentives are so lopsided that I would not be surprised if there are 10 Rachel Dolezals for every Michael Jackson.

What you are addressing is the dirty little secret behind PC and moral/cultural relativism.

What it comes down to is that for these people, our values are relative and theirs are absolute. And nobody ever calls them on it. I’ve been amazed by this for forty years.

They claim, “You can’t legislate morality, when in obvious fact we seldom legislate anything else.”

What is all this idiocy about insisting everybody pretend men are really women because they say they are other than a so-far successful attempt to impose the most radical possible vision of morality on everybody else.

It’s not just impolite to call Caitlyn Bruce, it’s wrong (immoral) and must be punished.

Her family adopted a brood of dindus and she grew up among them. If this is on anyone, it’s her parents.

Fascinating.

He basically says race doesn’t “really” exist, that it’s only a “social construct.”

Then he says he finds her behavior offensive.

But never bothers to explain why.

If race, like gender, is only a social construct, why would he celebrate those who change their gender but not those who change their race?

Bruce Jenner changed his gender by an act of will, and the media refers to him as “she” and you are a horrible person if you don’t follow along. I’m surprised the media didn’t proclaim this idiot as black and accept it. It is easier to change race than gender and not nearly as perverted.

“...shocked that someone would act this way...”

I’m shocked that some people can kill their own children, or that some presidents can be in office for the express purpose of destroying this country, or that an entire political party can now have the destruction of this country as its primary objective.

But back to the top quote - it annoys me when people say that. We live in a country of 330 million people - there will ALWAYS be creeps and weird characters. If people want a chance to live in a place with only ‘normal people’, then move to a village of 100 or so people, and maybe you’ll find it there, maybe.

I can find no references to “baboon whips” on the internet other than this nut’s reference.

Baboons are large, powerful animals. A whip isn’t what I’d want for defense against one or especially a pack of them. This would be something like carrying a whip to ward off a pack of wolves.

Although the sjambok, the whip she meant, is pretty formidable.

“Racism and white supremacy are real and powerful in America in 2015.”

Actually I agree with this. I know MANY WHITES that won’t get near a black doctor, for example, because they have no clue as to whether the doctor EARNED his degree, or was ‘pushed along’ to help out the numbers.

That, of course, doesn’t meet the definition of ‘racism’ he’s implying above, where irrational decisions are made according to race - such as not signing a black baseball player because you don’t like blacks, even though his name is Jackie Robinson, but still the decisions made by these people when seeing a doctor are based on race - it’s just that they’re rational decisions, given what’s going on in our society.

“Nor did she have to worry that anyone would dig into her claims that she’d received hate mail and was the victim of hate crimes — which are also now in doubt.”

Interesting...since she fooled everyone into thinking that she was black, until now, the, likely fake, hate mail and victimization never existed - meaning being black (or appearing black, in this case) DOES NOT generate the hatred she claims - she made it up.

I wonder how many other ‘black leaders’ (and other, so called, oppressed people) are pulling the same stunt, even now.

“I’m simply saying that this behavior is inevitable given the current social and linguistic codes of the worlds in which Dolezal lives.”

I can add a bit to that. If she had been some kind of a white leader (or candidate for office), heck if she was even a plumber in Ohio who challenged a Presidential candidate, the media would have been ALL OVER HER. She wouldn’t have lasted a day.
