House Rejects Trade Bill, Rebuffing Obama’s Dramatic Appeal
New York Times ^ | June 12, 2015 | Jonathan Weissman

Posted on 06/12/2015 10:52:45 AM PDT by nwrep

House Democrats rebuffed a dramatic personal appeal from President Obama on Friday, torpedoing his ambitious push to expand his trade negotiating power — and, quite likely, his chance to secure a legacy-defining trade accord spanning the Pacific Ocean.

Lazmataz is right.

The House did undermine the whole Fast Track procedure and the big Obama wet dream trade package in their vote today.

They did so because anti-commerce Dems were against it and enough Republicans turned against Boehner.

What they did was vote to strip out a key provision of the Fast Track legislation, which was supposed to fund union employees and everybody else who ended up “displaced” from their jobs by the trade agreement. It also gives Obama certain powers in negotiating that he wouldn’t otherwise have.

Without this “displacement” wording the Fast Track will not proceed.

BUT...after the vote, which effectively undermined the whole Fast Track and Pacific Trade Agreement, the REPUBLICANS in the House quickly voted to send the legislation back to the Senate, which means the Senate can fool with it and then send it back to the House...in other words do the whole damn thing over again.

Fast Track and the Pacific Trade agreement are not dead.

As Laz says: If the bill failing...is temporary.

Democrats did the right thing for the wrong reason.

Isn't that always the case these days? I was thinking that for once I sided with the Dems, then I thought about it for a second, my objection to this is simply because it was secret, there is not too much credible information to oppose it or be for it. I wasn't siding with the Dems after all and feel better. The only people who should be cheering are those who oppose secret unread legislation, but the devil did them a favor today. One law I would like to see is a 5 question (per page of legislation) test that every congressman has to pass for each piece of legislation before voting on it. I would volunteer to head the department that makes up and administers the test. That would be great.

Sigh.. You folks have all been duped.

This is EXACTLY what Obama wanted. He wanted the TPA to fail. Watch him executive order the TPP now.

Opposition will grow, not diminish.

That is why they had to rush this vote.

Senate GOP do not want to handle this hot potato again.

...”my objection to this is simply because it was secret”....

Unfortunately secret or not was not part of the deals....for or against....so you were against and co-operated with the Dems....as did other Republicans...

So Demorats won twice over in this vote on behalf of Hillary should she win.

This is Cruz’s opportunity to correct his thinking, and vote “NO” this time around.

The problem isn’t that America is afraid of trade,

They should be afraid, very afraid.

I’m shocked the unions still had the muscle to get this defeated.

It was a good test for them.

However, the damage this has caused the GOP is going to be permanent. The D’s voted with the Tea Party this time. That’s going to leave a mark.

So, for the record, there are Democrats, the other Democrats, and Conservatives. That’s now official.

He has already been hammered on his phony executive orders regarding immigration.

He won't be able to do it with this either.

Obama and the GOP leadership got humiliated today.
