House Rejects Trade Bill, Rebuffing Obama’s Dramatic Appeal
New York Times ^ | June 12, 2015 | Jonathan Weissman

Posted on 06/12/2015 10:52:45 AM PDT by nwrep

House Democrats rebuffed a dramatic personal appeal from President Obama on Friday, torpedoing his ambitious push to expand his trade negotiating power — and, quite likely, his chance to secure a legacy-defining trade accord spanning the Pacific Ocean.

This isn't unusual.

The Right and left joined up to oppose NAFTA as well.

Thanks, Democrats for providing the key opposition.

Now I will wash my moth out with laundry detergent so I may never have to say that again.

Pelosi made a deal with Boehner to try and pass TPP. In the end out, Boehner was out maneuvered by his own hubris and the Dems come up smelling like roses.

“So Pelosi and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, cut a deal. Neither side promised a certain number of votes to the other. But both House leaders forged a plan which could conceivably reward both sides with a political victory and concurrently test their respective abilities to gin up votes. Pelosi and Boehner engineered a deal to advance the trade framework to the floor – so long as Democrats scored a vote on something called Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).”

Very good article by Chad Pergram about the political wheeling dealing that blew up in Boehner’s face. It’s worth the read at Fox News. Good for posting at the FRP news site

I don’t disagree entirely.

But these are different times. We have a good third of “our” party representatives who want to serve Wall Street (now and when they leave ‘public service) and please Obama.

Pelosi can get a few more payoffs for the unions and this thing could rise again. She, Reid and the rest love screwing the Republicans just as much as they love worshipping Obanana.

Been following this on all the Cable News Networks. All of them are saying this is a severe SLAP IN THE FACE to Hussein Obama. Being the narcissist that he is, you know he is steaming. Former IN Sen. Bayh (Dem) says this type of stuff will hurt the Dem nominee in 2016. One can only hope.

“I suspect the dems have concluded the next POTUS will be a Republican and have decided they need to start placing some limits on executive authority...”

That is it exactly. They don’t want a Republican President to make trade deals, period.

That bill allows the president to make trade deals and limits the congress to voting the deal up or down (no amendments can be added). So, it doesn’t mean the president can make deals that can’t be struck down - they can be by congress’s up or down vote.

I want to scream, even to the guy hosting Rush Limbaugh’s show right now....They are not voting on TPP right now. They are not voting on the TRADE DEAL right now.

All they are voting on RIGHT NOW, is the TPA - the PROCEDURES FOR the trade deals. AGHGHGHGHGHGH!!!!!!

I can’t believe that I am happy about Pelosi right now. I’m stunned.

**********************************

Pelosi was really worried about Obama losing his big initiative at the hands of the Dems. I believe her sudden “this gives us a chance to slow walk the bill and get a better deal for the American people” is the result of Pelosi seeing the writing on the wall (TAA would fail) so she is trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Sort of like the fox ... didn’t really want the grapes anyway because they were probably sour. Pelosi is not doing this for the American people - she’s protecting the Dem backsides as best she can.

That being said .... ANY vote, Pelosi or otherwise, that deprives Obama of something he wants SO badly and IS a major rejection of his tactic “a vote against this is a vote against me” , makes me happy, too.

...”House hands Obama stunning defeat of trade agenda” ...

Which is actually what Obama wanted....he and Demorats played their propaganda hand to the public and they bought it....once again outplaying the Republicans....who never learn the risks Demorats are willing to take to win in the long run.

It’s also his opportunity to say he approves of trade abroad and tried to make it happen within certain restraints but it wasn’t to be and maybe the next bill will be better.

I just hope they keep this one down and didn’t strain their milk too much to fight Obanana on the Iran nuke giveaway.

All I can say is when voting in the 2016 Election remember your Congress Critter and what he/she did for you. If he/she voted how you wanted support him/her if he voted against your will, vote against him/her. I for one will not support Cruz, Rubio, Walker, Bush or Jindal! I know there are fellow Freepers whom will exocriate me because I do not endorse the prevailing Cruz. Why should I as he was for something that I am definitely against!

Ditto. What I also find grating about the bill as it lumps countries which are clearly allies (Canada, Japan, Singapore, Australia) with those which clearly are not (Mexico, Vietnam).

There would be no reason to rush through a trade agreement in secret if the countries involved shared similar standards of living.

Ted Cruz: Jeff Sessions is WRONG about ObamaTrade deal – [FULL AUDIO]

Please listen to the full interview. Here it is in his own words. The US has explicitly opted out of the immigration section. There is no international body that can trump US sovereignty. Ted Cruz has addressed every concern in this interview.

Don't trust them. At a minimum:

Logrolling is the trading of favors, or quid pro quo, such as vote trading by legislative members to obtain passage of actions of interest to each legislative member.
