FDR'S D-DAY PRAYER JUNE 6TH, 1944

Films such as "Saving Private Ryan", "The Thin Red Line", and "U 571" bring to life the struggles of a whole generation of Americans who fought tyranny in World War II. No movie, however, could adequately capture the sense of dedication and courage which so many ordinary men and women demonstrated in order to bring an end to the horrors that were being committed against innocent people around the world. Sadly, this generation is passing on, as about 1,000 of these heroes are now dying each day due to old age. We must remember and honor these great people to whom America--and you and I--owe everything.

June 6, 1944 is the Anniversary of D-Day. On that day, Allied soldiers stormed onto the French coast to begin the liberation of Europe, then still firmly in Hitler’s grip. It was a bitter struggle for those first units, and by the end of the day, 4,900 soldiers had given their lives. Across the US, people fell to their knees in prayer; churches, synagogues were packed; the Liberty Bell was sounded; and people openly wept. It was a day of millions of prayers for the welfare of our troops and the success of the mission. That night, President Roosevelt went on radio to lead the Nation in prayer:

Almighty God,
Our sons, pride of our Nation,
This day have set upon a mighty endeavor;
a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion,
and our civilization,
and to set free a suffering humanity . . .
They fight to end conquest…
They fight to liberate . . .
They yearn but for the end of battle,
for their return to the haven of home.

Success may not come with rushing speed,
but we shall return again and again;
and we know by Thy grace, and the righteousness
of our cause, our sons will triumph.
Thy will be done, Almighty God, Amen.

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

That stinks on ice. Then again, are we surprised?

On a much lighter note, I want to thank God especially for the gift of my Uncle John, a nonagenarian who landed and fought at Omaha Beach! It's been a privilege to have him in my life!

Here's to you, Uncle John! 💙

The aggressive mama moose has been in the news for several days. And per usual, visitors, and locals at times, think the warnings are for someone else.

Don’t get near mamas and their babies...and especially this “family” as mama was already unhappy. Silly humans!

I love the zoo/blizzard story! They have LONG legs and can jump over TALL fences....snow was just the ladder they needed. LOL!

And a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

Hope you are having an enjoyable weekend.

Sunny earlier today, but now it looks like rain. A long, soaking overnight rain would be nice.

Army Divisions....

U.S. Allies

Our thanks to Uncle John for his service to our country.

Omaha Beach linked the U.S. and British beaches. It was a critical link between the Cotentin Peninsula, also known as the Cherbourg Peninsula, and the flat plain in front of Caen. Omaha was also the most restricted and heavily defended beach. For that reason, at least one veteran U.S. Division (lst Infantry Division) was tasked to land there. The terrain was difficult. Omaha beach was unlike any of the other assault beaches in Normandy. Its crescent curve and unusual assortment of bluffs, cliffs and draws were immediately recognizable from the sea. It was the most defensible beach chosen for D-Day; in fact, many planners did not believe it a likely place for a major landing. The high ground commanded all approaches to the beach from the sea and tidal flats. Moreover, any advance made by U.S. troops from the beach would be limited to narrow passages between the bluffs. Advances directly up the steep bluffs were difficult in the extreme.

German strong points were arranged to command all the approaches and pillboxes were cited in the draws to fire east and west, thereby enfilading troops while remaining concealed from bombarding warships. These pillboxes had to be taken out by direct assault. Compounding this problem was the allied intelligence failure to identify a nearly full-strength infantry division, the 352nd, directly behind the beach. It was believed to be no further forward than St. Lo and Caumont, 20 miles inland. The V Corps was assigned to this sector. The objective was to obtain a lodgment area between Port-en-Bessin and the Vire River and ultimately push forward to St. Lo and Caumont in order to cut German communications (St. Lo was a major road junction). Allocated to the task were 1st and 29th Divisions, supported by the 5th Ranger Battalion and 5th Engineer Special Brigade.

I live in the mountains where there are almost never any tornadoes. Weld County Colorado has the second largest amount of tornadoes in the US. It is a large county situated where weather causes lots of tornadoes. With radar coverage and computers watching they get quite a high count of tornadoes but most are the small variety. All that is like 50 miles away so I did not know anything until I heard the news.

God Bless you young lady.

I’ve been doing a mea-culpa on that post. I’ve been told it was erroneous; it was my fault. See: http://politicsandfinance.blogspot.com/2013/07/story-about-barack-obama-and-d-day.html
