'True, football, or soccer as it is known here, is not as central to American as it is to European, African or South and Central American life. Nowhere near.
Up until recently, the game has been unloved by the major US television networks, which have long bemoaned the lack of breaks in play, the paucity of goals and the glut of draws.
Absent from the US game are big-name male stars and big-name clubs. The New York Red Bulls will never rival the New York Yankees. Real Salt Lake pales, rather risibly, alongside Real Madrid.
However, football is no longer met with American indifference. Nor any more does it offer proof of America's sporting isolationism.'

Every soccer thread seemingly has a built in soccer ignorance ping.
Sorry, but soccer is crap-worthy. Any “sport” that women can play pretty indistinguishably from men doesn’t require much of anything in the way of guts or true athletic talent.
Point well taken, lol.
Frankly, if I’m traveling and relaxing in front of a TV I’ve found cricket and rugby or sumo more entertaining to watch than soccer. One has the leisurely pace of baseball but with tension as the side batting second tries to surpass the score of the first. And the other two have some of the violence of American football. Can’t watch more than five minutes of soccer without becoming bored.
Here is the answer:
Them.
Why are you pinging me to this thread?
Socker isn’t football, it’s 3rd world crap!!!
Actually nobody co-opted anything. There’s a number of games that spawned from the same root, and whichever one is most popular in a given region is called football. So soccer, rugby, Gaelic, Aussie Rules, American and Canadian are all just football somewhere.
Thanks for immediately proving my post #41.
Got into a discussion with a fan many years ago. He mentioned “football”. When I determined what he was actually talking about I said: “Oh! Soccer. Yeah, my little girl plays that.” (He didn’t find it amusing in the least.)
Soccer is the sport of gays, lesbians, and terrorists.
Hmmmmmm, let me see, Soccer or Oprah. Can’t watch either.
These are hilarious!
That said, I can’t stand watching hairy, undersized Spaniards running around playing “futbul.” I’m concerned a certain somebody on FR is going to show up now and use that foreign lingo in a serious manner. He knows who he is!
Contempt isn’t ignorance.
I played soccer, football, basketball, baseball, wrestling in high school.. the only time I had butterflies was at the beginning of the football game. Wrestling g was second in intensity.. football is the best organized sport.
I will admit, I have found the English Premiere League compelling, as it has the best athletes, and the quality of play is extremely high.
Plus it’s on at 8AM when it has no competition.
The AA Pittsburgh Riverhounds.....not so much.
Don't knock it till you've tried it, Gold.
I suppose that all that slobbering would take “endurance.”
