'True, football, or soccer as it is known here, is not as central to American as it is to European, African or South and Central American life. Nowhere near.
Up until recently, the game has been unloved by the major US television networks, which have long bemoaned the lack of breaks in play, the paucity of goals and the glut of draws.
Absent from the US game are big-name male stars and big-name clubs. The New York Red Bulls will never rival the New York Yankees. Real Salt Lake pales, rather risibly, alongside Real Madrid.
However, football is no longer met with American indifference. Nor any more does it offer proof of America's sporting isolationism.'

I hate soccer, unless it’s late and I can’t sleep...it’s better than a sleeping pill.

I happen to like and encourage America’s sporting isolationism.
Euros and 3rd world types enjoy soccer. More power to them. But, we find it boooooorrriiiiing.

"However, football is no longer met with American indifference." No, we're hopping mad they've co-opted the term "football". No indifference about that.
To: the scotsman
We LOVE FOOTBALL. It’s soccer we take exception to.
To: the scotsman
The soccer riots are fun to watch though.

which have long bemoaned the lack of breaks in play, the paucity of goals and the glut of draws. How about the drama queens who exaggerate each and every physical penalty as if it were life-threatening.

This is America. We don't care about the sports they play in other countries. Our version of football is loosely based on soccer and rugby. Our baseball is likewise loosely based on cricket. If we'd wanted to play or watch those European sports, we wouldn't have invented our own versions! I doubt soccer would be as popular as it is if not for the influx of third worlders and the fact that both boys and girls can play it in school as it is seen as a unisex game.

Commie football. Someone spills a beer, words fly then fists. In the melee, bleachers collapse killing 30, then it pours out into the streets where government troops use live rounds to quell the violence illuminated by burning cars well into the night. What’s not to love?

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

How about the drama queens who exaggerate each and every physical penalty as if it were life-threatening. I'm not sure which is more wretched: them, or the ghetto thugs gesticulating and gyrating obscenely in the end zone.

Well I’ll go against the grain.
I can identify with soccer. I can’t identify with concussions or jumping 40 inches.
As for watch-ability, I’ll take 90 minutes (call it two hours with extensions) over three hours.
Plus there’s the thug factor. How many assaults should be allowed before a team becomes unwatchable.
