Concerned About Mass Die-Offs, Morgan Freeman Converted His 124-Acre Ranch Into a Bee Sanctuary
Healthy Debates ^ | 5/28/15 | Nick Meyer

One of the most unique things about grassroots movements that a lot of people don’t realize is that they have the potential to pick up some pretty incredible, and oftentimes unexpected, allies as they grow in size and scope. Along the way, these new allies lend their own talents, perspectives, advice and more the movement. And sometimes, these allies end up being pretty influential simply by being themselves, as many people have especially noted with celebrities. Most celebrities, love ’em or hate ’em (and love or hate the system for that matter), are one-man or one-woman media outlets with the ability to sway countless thousands of people with one or two sentences in the midst of any interview.

Where did I hear about Monsanto (spraying pesticides) and the bees dying off.

Fantasy land or Mother Earth Magazine. Same thing.

It was mites that was causing CCD. It is part of the natural cycle but thanks to those nasty chemical / pharmacy companies we now can dust for mites and mitigate the effects.

Yes, Morgan is a lefty, but he does avoid race-baiting for the most part.

It's a cold spring.

Orchards are starting to install mason bee hives because they will work in colder temperatures while the honey bees are sitting around their hives shivering.

As with everything in life there are trade offs. The mason bees don't produce enough honey to harvest and they do not travel far so you can't hire them. Still cheaper then hiring the guy with the ladder and paint brush to pollinate your trees.

Me too! I am glad Morgan Freeman is bringing attention to this issue.
We cannot survive without bees.
Neonicotinoids are killing our bees thus our food.

124 acres is a ranch. Except in Texas, unless it has some abandoned trailer homes and a reeking cesspit.

I live in a farming community that depends on the activities of the bee. bee hive failure is a big problem right now it is not imaginary. I wont pretend to know all the causes but I do know that the problem started in the last 30 years there are lots of theory on what is going on some say it is a mite the be bees are catching another idea is that a lot of the pesticides the farmers are using is the cause. I think it is great that Morgan freeman is doing this. hopefully his sanctuary will be a place that real science can be done to figure out solutions rather then a nut job group trying to pass laws to combat a problem that at this point needs to be studied.

It’s not a ranch until it’s over a thousand acres.

Yes, there is such a tax break but there are some stipulations. I’m sure this will place will be set up to meet them.

I live just out of Fresno CA in the town of Visalia. there are a lot of almonds in the area lots of fruits oranges, cherry’s I moved here from Los Angeles about a year and a half ago but I grew up in Montana and the only industry in that state is farming and cattle. the central valley has just about everything growing here and it is really sad because the State of California is destroying the farming here through bad water management. we are more concerned with building a bullet train then providing water for farming.

Thanks. Here in Kansas, not many crops rely on bees for pollination. All the grains that are our main crops are gravity or wind pollinated. There is some honey production, and I have lots of bees that visit my large garden, though I don't grow much that needs their help in pollination.

My main gardening interest is tomatoes, sweet peppers, corn, and asparagus, which are self pollinating, or do not need pollination. Also cucumbers (need pollination help) and beans(which can self pollinate.) I guess asparagus does need insect help, but I only deal with it as a transplant of a perennial plant.

Had to laugh at that one my self. Our main road going to the ranch house is 4 and 1/2 miles from the South main gate to the house. A little over 8 miles if you come in from the North gate and 6.3 from the East gate.

I can't see or hear Morgan Freeman's voice without being angered by his ever so ungracious reaction to a BJ Lawson ad in 2010 that purported to feature Freeman's voice. He called the campaign liars despite the fact that they not only had a contract saying it was Freeman but immediately pulled the ad when they realized they had been duped and apologized. Instead of graciously accepting the way they handled the unfortunate situation as the campaign being “taken”. His attacking them as liars left my district with the arrogant, pompous jerk David Price winning. I have a tough time seeing good in the actor, but for whatever reason even financial I think it is good to try to maintain the bee population-—maybe he could just get stung a couple of times.

I was hoping someone would mention mason bees. They are proven better pollinators and anyone can have a small mason bee house - not bigger than a bird house- in their yard. you can hang it up on a garage or shed. There is a great short documentary on a website called Growingagreenerworld.com. I saw it last summer. Well worth watching. We kept 5 honey bee hives for years, it is work. Plus we didn’t need all that honey.

124 acres is a ranch? LOL!

It is for tax purposes and being eligible to apply for farm subsidies.

putting his money ???

Unless he got the bees and equipment for free...I'm guessing he used his own money to buy them...

I'm not aware of any government program that gives bee farming equipment away...but you never know...

Tax write off as bee farm??

I don't know the tax codes for this type of investment, but if there was a tax write off...so what ?

The bees know where their hives are.

by careful management and establishment of new colonies by splitting existing colonies, the bees can be maintained on the property. Of course the bees can stray to adjacent properties in their collection work but return to the hive to deposit their loads.

Also we do not know how many colonies the man has. For PR purposes, only one is actually needed. I live on a half acre lot that has been a be sanctuary since about 1975. Alas there are no existing colonies here now.

Every morning ol Morgan gets up, faces the east and in his best Shakespearean voice quotes “To bee or not to bee..... that is my question”
