Hawaii Island police report that a 47-year-old fisherman died Friday in Kailua-Kona during a fishing accident.

Responding to a 10:48 a.m. call, police learned that a swordfish had been observed in Honokohau Harbor and that fisherman Randy Llanes of Kailua-Kona had jumped into the water with a spear gun. The fish was then seen thrashing about, leaving a puncture wound to the man’s upper chest.

Hawaii County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and attempted CPR. They took Llanes to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m.

Acting Sgt. David Matsushima of the Kona patrol said that after the fish got hit with Llanes’ spear, “the fish got wrapped around a mooring anchor, came back and swam at him.”

The Hawaiian swordfish is more commonly called broadbill and does not taste anywhere near as good as the cold water variety.

These guys go out there on a big boat with all sorts of nice equipment to claim themselves a big macho fisherman.

Meanwhile the fish in the ocean has no such special rigging but God equipped the fish with one special defense for himself. A very nice sword. This time, the fish won.

Chalk one up for the macho fish.

Maybe this is why swordfish isn’t kosher.

Do they lack scales?

The Torah gives two signs that determine if a fish is kosher—fins and scales. 1 In order for a fish to be kosher, it must have both of these signs. According to the Talmud,2 any fish that has scales also has fins. Thus, if one knows that a particular fish has scales, it is considered a kosher fish.3 As with the other laws of kosher, the Torah doesn't give a reason as to why only a fish with these signs is considered kosher. These laws are considered a chok (a decree beyond comprehension).4

Definition of Scales

Certain fish have scales while in the water, but they shed their scales when caught In order to render a fish kosher, the scales must be visible to the naked eye5 and they must be easy to remove from the skin of the fish, either by hand or with an instrument.6 If the scales can be only be removed after soaking the fish in scalding water, there are differing views as to whether the fish is considered kosher.7 Sturgeon is one such fish, and, in practice, it is not considered kosher.

When swordfish are outlawed, only outlaws will have swordfish.

Surprised the swordfish's thrashing wasn't blamed on climate change.

Woman dubbed China’s 'human kebab' after falling 20ft onto a steel rod which ran through the entire length of her body (and somehow survived)

Construction site worker Wu Xingxian, 42, fell 20ft onto rod. It went through her thigh, stomach, chest and exited at her neck. Team of surgeons in China took five hours removing it. If she avoids infection, she should make a full recovery

Their swords are quite hard. Not very sharp, but the force they generate swimming is great. Not a fish to trifle with in its environment.

If his life insurance has a double indemnity clause for this, they may want to investigate further.

Elmer Keith used to go shark fishing off the West Coast every year. When he reeled one in by the boat he would shoot it in the head with a 44 mag.
They fought a bit less then.
