Diplomatic tensions surrounding disputed territories in the South China Sea could escalate dramatically following reports China is now putting weapons on its artificial islands in the area.
Australias defence force is considering joining the U.S. in flying and sailing freedom of navigation missions over the disputed territory, where China has been building islands by dragging sand from a reef and piling it up to create structures now being monitored by satellites.
Fairfax Media reports the Australian fly-over expeditions may occur as a result of heightened concerns that China is enhancing its military capabilities and reach across the maritime expanse.

I do admire the engineering. That was built in less than one year.
I bet the soldiers defending that little thing, are hoping that war won’t start.
Pretty serious development.
Poking around on Google Maps, I see there’s a LOT of islands around there. They could pull off a series of “nautical jurisdiction” claims, taking over what are barely considered islands, and (as noted) building artificial islands where convenient & needed to extend claims further. Then, of course, they’d militarily enforce their claims, taking over and/or shutting down much of the South China Sea.
Look for things to get very lively on the world stage in the next 6 months.
And the USA will, on the whole, just look on and gawk.
...looks like a damn-fine hotel they’re building there...
I bet the soldiers defending that little thing, are absolutely expecting war.
A single Tomahawk cruise missile’s would do the job if needed.
A nice typhoon would make some needed adjustments... Where’s Cheney’s weather machine when you need it...

Oh you mean HARP?
It takes us longer just for the environmental impact statements.
Ok. Done. Who do I tell/sell this to? Certainly not going to post it here.

Sure, a small tactical nuke 30 to 50 miles off the coast. Bye.
Actually, they did that whey they built the Three Gorges Dam.
I think the only agency I’d want to deal with would be NASA-the others would just want to steal the deal, and NASA probably isn’t very happy with the powers that be right now-they might like to score something big...
Wouldn’t you have to get pretty close to the 50 miles to launch the thing from a sub?
Yes—close enough. From public news over quite a few years, several allies around that area of the Pacific have various kinds of defense systems.
“Well Darn,
Ive been losing my weapons in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.”
Gues where they all wound up?
“Now some scientist here needs to devise a way to create a directional tsunami...”
My thought was a good storm will make those islands disappear. Real islands have substantial bases. These are sand bars. I’ve seen hurricanes remove or move entire islands. Hurricane Pass in Florida, for example.
If you see the H-6 based there, it’s a clear indication of their intentions. That’s their anti-shipping cruise missile platform.
A fleet of MSG-29s.
