The iconic Mount Everest could see a major loss of its glaciers over the course of this century, according to a new scientific study that its chief author calls the the first detailed modelling study of all glaciers in the Dudh Koshi basin in the Everest region of Nepal.
The paper, published Wednesday in the journal The Crocosphere, was authored by glacier researcher Joseph Shea and several colleagues from France and the Netherlands.
The biggest result here is that the glaciers in the basin, we find them to be more sensitive to temperature than anyone expected before, says Shea.
To study them, the researchers used a glacier model and fired it with different climate change scenarios based on emissions pathways used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. And they found that in one extreme model run, glacial loss by the year 2100 could be 99 percent.
The model were using is a tool, and there are more complex ways of modeling the glaciers, but we dont have that information yet, Shea says. But this is the tool were using, and what that tool is showing is that the glaciers are quite sensitive.

As a computer software engineer I LAUGH when I hear them reference ‘computer models’ for anything.
I can program a valid computer model to ‘prove’ anything you want me to prove
Well, either way, they’ll say it’s due to climate change.
Man-made climate change.
Due to capitalism.
In America only.
Caused by white males only.
In the mean time Chris Mooney of the Washington Post needs to grow up and get real. It ain't news when a shill is pushing story lines that NEVER happen. It's NOT "news" until fish fly at jet speeds. It's NOT news until the glaciers of Mount Everest shrink. Or show signs of shrinking. Or give up two inches. Get what I'm saying Chris?
And if Chris Mooney had any doubts - - would he PLEASE give us an account of ANY global warming 'prediction' that has come true. ANY. Going back to Pacific Islands going underwater in a 'few years' (Scientific American 30 years ago...) to all the latest scare stuff.
Give us ONE 'prediction' that has come true.
Chris - report on what's happening... or give conservatives equal time on all the disasters that will happen if we don't control the unicorn populations.
White males...the REAL problem for the whack left!
Good. They need fresh water over there.
actually, I should have taken it a step further...
Their REAL problem is with Christians, and ultimately, with Christ.
The glaciers could slide off the mountain do to gravity and earthquakes.
And I could become the first 250+, male pound prima ballerina.
Guess which is more likely...
more like 200
We don't have much information, but if you squint just right, the grant money keeps pouring in!
The speaker is a tool, too.
the sky is falling! the sky is falling! the sky is falling!

This is entirely plausible. The planet has been in a warming cycle for at least 14,000 years, with some significant periods of cooling occurring throughout the period. Glaciers have waxed and waned in response to these variations over time. When it climate warms, the glaciers shrink. When the climate cools, glaciers grow. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Since global temperature hasn’t changed for over the last 17 years, the glaciers probably not going anywhere. But, since climate is constantly change over long time frames, the most likely outcome will be continuing warming and smaller glaciers. Nature.
Wasn’t that supposed to happen already?
Pray America is waking
Certainly the operative word in the headline is “could”. Based on erroneous models and false assumptions any supposition is possible but not likely.
