Scott Walker might skip Florida primary in Bush-Rubio territory
Washington Post ^ | May 26, 2015 | Jenna Johnson

As Republicans prepare to pick their next presidential nominee, there's one primary that's already likely to get expensive and intense: Florida -- home to former governor Jeb Bush, who is likely to run, and Sen. Marco Rubio, who made his announcement in Miami.

That's why Scott Walker, the Wisconsin governor who has been riding high in early polls, said Tuesday that he might skip the Florida primary.

“If we chose to get in, I don’t think there’s a state out there that we wouldn’t play in," Walker, who has yet to get into the race, said on Laura Ingraham's radio show on Tuesday. "I mean, other than maybe Florida where Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio are, at least in some of the polls, essentially tied, and they’re going to eat up a good amount of that financial advantage that Gov. Bush is going to have. Remember [Florida Gov.] Rick Scott spent something like a 100 million dollars running for governor there last year."

I think that’s a wise move; a saving of money and resources. It wouldn’t surprise me if others skipped FL as well. Why spend millions of dollars and waste time and effort in a State that you know you are not going to win?

Maybe I am wrong, but this tells me a few things...

First, Walker is betting on early states like IA and SC to carry him.

Second, as of now, he doesn’t have the resources to compete.

Third, I think is a mistake...a strong showing there would help him immensely.

Interesting tactics.

It makes sense.

If Walker still comes in near the top, it makes him look even stronger and he’ll still have money set aside to move forward.

Florida feasts on campaign money.

It also makes this a Rubio vs JBush race.

The others are just out manned there.

Florida GOP decided to be a “winner take all” state this time around. I agree - a least some of the contenders will choose to sit it out, depending on how Rubio and Bush are doing.

Not a good decision, in my opinion. Even if Wslker comes in third, it would benefit him.

I don’t think either Bush or Rubio is going to be the final candidate. They’re native sons here in Florida, so in a sense, you can almost discount the votes for them. But whoever comes in next after them will be very important.

The only candidate popular here in the last round was Newt Gingrich, but Mitt Romney (supported by Rush Limbaugh, who didn’t like Gingrich because he’d been divorced several times and had made money as an independent speaker ... er, unlike Rush, right????) stomped him into the ground with an ad barrage that you wouldn’t believe. The Gingrich campaign really wasn’t prepared for this, since the Romney “ad barrage” also included hiring people to go around ripping up Gingrich yard signs, which were very hard to get.

You’d have thought all of Florida loved Romney, but he was not popular here - however, what his campaign manager did was make it look as if he was enormously popular, and many people will then either vote for that candidate or not vote at all. And that’s what happened here.

So I think people like Walker and even Fiorina should at least try to keep a presence in Florida. If they can’t afford ads, they should distribute yard signs.

Ahh . . . but lowering expectations is NOT a mistake!

IMHO, he’s showing some political and financial genius!

The great state of Florida will be a shoot out with Jeb, Rubio and perhaps Ted Cruz, given his Cuban heritage.

It's winner take all and tons of money is needed to compete state wide.

Actually, this might even give Rubio a chance to knock off Bush. He's probably the only one who can in Florida (A bit of Survivor strategy?).

Bush is waiting to cash in in FL, then hopes with the backing of the GOPe and the MSM, that those delegates in his pocket will put wind at his back.

99 Delegates

SC has become irrelevant due to Graham as a “McCain” spoiler. (remember Mccain used fred Thompson to be a splitter to power protect him)

Possibly, but I disagree. I think Graham is not a strong player in the state...I hope I am correct about that. Linda hurting Conservatives would be bad.

Florida GOP decided to be a “winner take all” state this time around.

If that's the case, sitting out might also make sense. If Walker is doomed to 3rd, and Walker's votes would likely go disproportionately to Rubio over Bush, he might be wise to let Rubio win it, rather than Jeb.

Walker or Cruz wins-IA

Bush wins NH

Rand Paul or Cruz wins NV
Walker and Cruz compete in SC

It would be better to let Rubio take Florida and keep Jeb's win numbers low.

He should go, state what sets him apart from the others, and let the chips fall where they may.

I think its wise too. My friends and I have discussed this very situation. Should it come down to the final days and Bush is still in, my friends and I have decided to vote for Rubio. Florida is a winner take all state and getting rid of Bush in his home state could turn things around for Walker or Cruz.

Fringe candidates wont matter one bit in Florida.

You, I and all the other political junkies, would see it that way. But, it is a WINNER-TAKE-ALL state and 95% of the American voters would not rationalize it like you have done.

The other Paul wasn't a serious candidate either, but he did well in Nevada. Rand Paul could actually show in NH. I have no use for Mr. Social Truce, either, but he is a serious candidate.
