Senate GOP prepared to replace Obamacare subsidies
Politico ^ | 05/26/2015 | JENNIFER HABERKORN and RACHAEL BADE

Preparing for a Supreme Court decision that could strike down Obamacare’s subsidies for nearly 7.5 million people this summer, Senate Republicans are coalescing around a plan to resurrect them — at a steep price for the White House.

With several Senate Republicans facing tough reelections, and control of the chamber up for grabs, 31 senators have signed on to a bill written by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) that would restore the subsidies for current Obamacare enrollees through September 2017. But the administration would have to pay a heavy price — the bill would also repeal Obamacare’s individual and employer mandates and insurance coverage requirements.

“In that moment of what could be political chaos, we’re offering such a reasonable proposal that solves a mess,” Johnson said. “It fixes a mess caused by a sloppily written law, unlawfully implemented. All we’re asking for is a little bit of freedom back, which would be, I think, pretty popular,” Johnson said. Even Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is backing Johnson’s measure, along with the rest of the chamber’s GOP leaders.

Johnson, who’s got a tight race in 2016, says the legislation would be a bridge to ensure that consumers can keep the insurance they have — a promise that President Barack Obama was widely criticized for breaking in 2014.

But even if Johnson could somehow persuade Obama and Senate Democrats to accept his plan — a herculean task — the bigger problem will be his Republican colleagues in the House.

“the bill would also repeal Obamacare’s individual and employer mandates and insurance coverage requirements.”

I don’t think you understand what this bill does based on the above changes to Obama’s healthcare law:

It appears the bill would cancel the law that REQUIRES people and companies to buy insurance (repeal individual and employers mandates). People could buy or not whatever medical insurance they want. Income tax penalties would go away since people wouldn’t be required any longer to have medical insurance or what kind they were required to have.

The requirements that medical insurance had to meet certain levels of care would also go away. So, the bill removes government control over medical insurance.

I don’t see this getting that far.

It’s a repeat of what happened with immigration; the Senate comes up with a “plan”, the House rejects it ... but because there’s a big SCOTUS decision saying “no, you can’t do that” there’s no opportunity for Obama to step in with an EO.

Actually, I see the Senate Dems filibustering this thing. Which means THEY can be tarred as the obstructionists.

I’m not sure this saves it...it gets rid of the employer mandate and the individual mandate. That means the only people on Obama Care are those who want to.

There is NOTHING REASONABLE ABOUT OBAMACARE !
It needs to be RIPPED OUT BY ITS ROOTS.
AND it needs to be DEFEATED TODAY.
Democrats just want the current FARCE to last until AFTER the 2016 election is over.
And those STUPID IDOTS, The "ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICANS", ARE GOING ALONG WITH THIS CRAP ?
DAMN THEM TO HELL ! ! !

They always wanted to save it. Even when it isn’t politically expedient with respect to their base. They can’t rely on the fact that “no Republicans voted for the law” when they are clearly upholding it.

The unconstitutional part is MANDATING people to get it, not allowing them to get it.

Once you take away the mandate, the Constitutionality is returned. Now, it still sucks, like all big government programs, but there is nothing unconstitutional about having this as an option.

It removes all the teeth from this tiger, turning it into something totally different.

On face value this seems like a reasonable compromise...

It does two things, takes away the liberals talking points that republicans don't care about poor people, they get to keep their subsidies, for now and gets past Obama demagoguing them ...

Two: getting rid of the employers mandates and insurance coverage requirements will drop rates and be more market driven than policy driven...

...and employers now will not have the employer mandate hanging over their heads and would open up more full time jobs and wages

Third point...having democrat oppose it would be great campaign talking points...to use against them...

you can do whatever you want, but once the mandates are gone, it’s not obama care anymore. It’s not unconstitutional anymore. Get real dude, it was the mandate that was the topic at hand when Roberts made the stupid ruling in 2012.

All this bill does is what the original Supreme Court challenge would have done had it been successful.

Rant, emote, spill estrogen all you want to. There is nothing unconstitutional about this when the mandates are gone. When the mandates are gone, this is a nothing law.

Look, we agree on the illegal alien in chief, we agree on the GOP establishment, no doubt we agree on Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham and Olympia Snow and all of them - but that doesn’t mean this might not be a bad thing. This is not being done by Obama. We’ll see what the conservatives in the Senate say about it.

This is NOT a bill Obama will like. Nor is this at all relevant to his birth status. Thats another issue. The fact is, this will destroy Obama Care for all intents and purposes. You won’t have to participate. I won’t have to participate. NO ONE will have to participate if they don’t want to. It was the forced participation we objected to in the first place. It was not because Obama isn’t eligible or for any other reason.

Try not to get so knee jerk and emotional.
