Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

I think this is the important part of his explanation:

It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

The next president can do a lot to benefit the country from this bill. Ted Cruz looks far in the future. We might never have had votes to pass this bill again.

Sorry Ted, I support you but this is too inside the beltway BS for me.

I never thought we’d die from the inside.

I did the first time I read Tocquville.

So you're ok with Ted Cruz voting to give the worst President ever even more power?

You may as well go vote Democrat. I frankly don't think giving Obama any more power is something ANY Conservative would be in favor of. The fact that Cruz did, without reading the trade agreement should send chills down your spine.

Not looking for perfection, but giving Obama even more power eliminates Cruz from consideration.

I bet this too....2016 the Democrats will win the White House.

Maybe not, but the Senate is sure up for grabs.

Great summation. I have no problem voting for Ted if he’s the nominee but time to stop treating him like the second coming as a good many people here have done. He’ll make a fine president if elected, but on this particular issue he blundered big time. It bothers me too that Rand Paul was correct on this and Ted wasn’t.

With TPP Cruz versus Jeb! it appears that there might not be all that much difference in how they would actually govern. Whats a little middle class destruction amongst republicans, eh? Although Cruz clearly has a far better conservative schtick.

Enjoy your koolaid.

So let me get this right. Ted Cruz voted to give dear leader more power so that he might have more power in the future if he is elected president?

And nothing strikes you as wrong about that?

In my view, there is no room for faith in politics. Our constitutional structure is based on the fact that men are not angels.

I don’t know if it will be a democrat or a republican who will win, but I’d be willing to bet that it will be a libtard.

Glad you are e-mailing his campaign.

This just doesn't look good- even if there is some reasonable explanation for it. (Mark Levine has been blasting anyone who voted for this on an almost daily basis.)

Ted Cruz is still the best overall candidate- hands down-But, he needs to tread very carefully when dealing with Gope. Their goal is take him out.

The MSM is actively trying to take him out too. Even Fox news is attempting to ignore or downplay his considerable strengths.( From time to time they launch petty little attacks against him.) And , of course his opponents are trying to end his campaign. (This is one of the reasons so many are running- waters down his numbers).

While I think he is absolutely our best candidate - Unfortunately- he also faces the most opposition ( precisely because he can win).

Everything that Ted does or doesn't do-Every vote for against any measure-that can be distorted or misrepresented in any way, will be used to try and bring him down. (He needs to remember Mississippi- a reminder that no tactic is too low for the Gope.)

Hopefully he and his campaign staff are anticipating how the opposition will attack and can come up with effective ways to counter their attacks, and get his message out (i.e. why he voted for this trade deal).

While this is one vote that some disagree with- it does not change the fact that he is the one person with the ability to beat the MSM at their own game, win the election, and help heal this nation from all the damage that has been done.

Many trolls on this thread are trying to insinuate that Ted Cruz is not sincere and doesn't really care about our Constitution, or our country- I don't believe that.

Whatever went on with this vote- he did what he thought was best under the circumstances.

I may or may not agree with it- but that does not change one bit- my overall opinion that he is a good man who loves our Constitution, (He has made a life long study of it.) and loves our country. There is no doubt that he will do his level best to defend them. He will work tirelessly to restore our Constitution-once he is elected president-and get us back on track.

He has my total support for his candidacy.

WE NEED HIM.

No dice. TTP is not public. It steals American jobs en masse.

You didn’t even ready it, Cruz. So. YOU? are CFR?

I believe that the Republican base, not the Elites but the people who put the Republicans in office, are more disgusted with the Republican party than they were from 2007-08. I also believe that this was a deliberate act by the Elite Republicans. To complete the destruction of the Conservative movement.

Why would this be of no consequence?

But, it’s not the case. US Firms manufacturing in Mexico and immediately shipping back to the US...DO NOT count in the current account deficit.

Even though it’s a practice that is draining the country of capital and jobs.”

AND giving us substandard products.
