The president of the Boy Scouts of America on Thursday called for an end to the group’s blanket ban on gay adult leaders, warning Scout executives that “we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be,” and that “any other alternative will be the end of us as a national movement.”
At the same time, religious organizations that sponsor a majority of local Scout troops, including the Mormons and Roman Catholics, should remain free to set their own policies for leaders, said the president, Robert M. Gates, the former director of the C.I.A. and the former secretary of defense.
Mr. Gates called for the changes at an annual national meeting of the group, in Atlanta. He said that he was not yet making a formal proposal but that the Scouts’ governing body should take up the issue formally at a future meeting.
The treatment of gay men and boys has been a source of wrenching debate over the last decade. Conservative religious groups that sponsor many Scout troops, including the Mormon Church and the Roman Catholic Church, have opposed the participation of openly gay members while local leaders in more liberal areas have called for an end to the ban.
In 2013, Boy Scout leaders from across the country voted, with more than 60 percent approval, to say that no youth may be denied membership “on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.” But it left intact the policy that no openly gay adults could serve in the organization.
Since then, a Scout group in New York has defied that policy by employing an openly gay leader, and several other groups around the country have expressed opposition to the ban.

If the Boy Scouts of America do away with the ban on scout leaders, it will mean the end of the Boy Scouts of America. No normal men will allow their children to enroll in an organization that allows homosexuals to take their children on overnight camping trips or to be counseled by a man with unnatural leanings. Why can’t the homosexuals be satisfied to accept things as they are and leave the Boy Scouts alone? They want to get their hands on our children.
Mr. Gates doesn’t care about our children. He is making political points for himself. When making your decision, remember the priests and what they have done to our children. Do you want to look back on this in 30 or 40 years and say ‘why didn’t we do something?’?.
Most pedophiles are. Just because a guy can get it on with a woman doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a second life.
I wonder that myself. FWIW, I would not send my daughter when she’s a teenager or even younger with a man other than myself, her actual father. Let’s face it, how attractive would some girl in her teens look to me if she wasn’t my own daughter, and if I wasn’t incestophobic as I am, because if there is something I am actually “phobic” of, it’s incest.
Well, it’s $%^&$% Robert Gates, WTH did you expect?! I expected him to view the BSA like he viewed the military.
But then you have to worry about when the leaders of Trail Life suddenly turn around and do an about face...

Well, if the top guys want to cut off the charters to the religious groups, let them do it, then watch as the BSA pretty much commits suicide in doing so. As I looked at your list, the top BSA membership religious groups also do not perform Same-Gender marriage, so it’s going to likely be that the BSA will die off in some time. What may happen is that some of the groups you listed will go over to Trail Life USA possibly, or just start their own.
Because it bothers people like us. That’s how.

Money talks...BSA may have a lot of corporate supporters, but they still get huge sums of “free” money from units and organizations who pay for Scouts that only exist on paper...
