Rand Paul is filibustering the Patriot Act right now, because it continues the unlimited NSA spying on all Americans.
A dem has joined in now and Mike Lee is on his way.
But, we arent buying it.
Anyone trying in this issue works for me. While I don't see him as the best overall candidate for 2016, I really appreciate how he articulates his views on the issues of privacy and individual freedom. Those are near and dear to my heart, as I've always valued my right to be eccentric without governmental interference - LOL
Yes - the more the merrier! Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) has actually been speaking out about the NSA outrages for a number of years.
Interesting, but will help his run for prez.
Without accomplishing the final blow.
Will keep him in good (somewhat) with the GOPe
Gotta please a lot of diverse groups. Which may be his downfall.
I hope Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Marco Rubio joins him.
You mean a politician cares about the constitution and the fourth amendment? Can’t be true... We need more control by our masters in the FedGov. How dare we think we have privacy rights - or to own guns... we need to be safe - because we are so scared. (our founders would laugh at our cowardly bowing and scraping to the FedGov machine)
This will make it difficult to do things like use a database of gun owners so the BAFTA can round up gun owners.
Or track anyone who disagrees with Lois Lerner.
Or has who has posted they don’t like the gay nazi’s - remember that is a hate crime in our brave new Federal government world.
How will they track down conservative republicans for extra IRS scrutiny if they don’t have a database of Americans private communications?
/sarc
I must be missing something. My life has not been impacted in any way by the Patriot Act, other than the terrorist attacks that have been thwarted.
I like what the legislation that Cruz is supporting does. It limits the NSA without stripping us of being able to detect and monitor threats. We can’t go back to pre 9/11. Freedom is not being dead at the hands of a terrorist.

Yep. Sigh... It's gone so far already, yet any teeny tiny pullback is nearly impossible.
Rand Paul gets a star for this one. (After his dumb abortion comment, he needed something positive.)
But, there is every reason to believe the NSA is collecting everything on everyone. They fudge admission of that fact by saying they are not listening, or some such dodge word.
exactly...does he have his clown suit on?
The Fourth Amendment is certainly worth protecting, since our government isn’t.
Political correctness prevents ‘profiling’ so the government
has to monitor everyone to see if anyone is saying anything ‘terroristic’ or ‘extreme’.
Its ‘prevention’ liberal style and it infringes on the Constitutional rights of us all.
So you don't mind that the federal government (through the NSA) has developed a massive set of interconnected, searchable databases that include everything electronic about your life?
Suppose, through some little thing, like a loved one breaking up with a lover who has access to the database, or through an apparently minor traffic incident that angers someone who has access, someone decides to harass YOU? They have enough information to just be annoying, or to destroy your life.
They can file complaints with government agencies based on something they found in their search on you; they know where you live, so they can anonymously report that you are a danger; with your email address they can intercept your ordinary messages to your family and friend and change the content of the messages before they are received.
All that kind of stuff is going on all the time now, and not just for stopping terrorism, but for the pettiest of reasons, because they are just ordinary people, who do things just because they can. Just like the plow truck that you may have annoyed who now plows your driveway shut over and over...
You may want to actually read all of Edward Snowden's book - it's appalling. And he did what he did because he was appalled both at what they were doing, and at how they where lying to everyone (including congress) about it. They claim this authority under the Patriot Act in their secret court.
For all the dislike he gets, you can be guaranteed some of his biggest detractors now will be campaigning for him if he wins the Republican primary. If voters could get themselves behind Romney as legit opposition there will be no problem doing the same for Rand at all.
“I must be missing something. My life has not been impacted in any way by the Patriot Act”
How would you know that? They do everything in secret. Maybe they just have not gotten around to you yet. :-)
You just brought a giant smile to my face. You are right. If everybody finally came around to voting for Mitt and McStain they will do the same for Rand Paul. LOL!
Seriously though I love the guy but I think some of our best and brightest need to be in the Senate. Everybody can’t be President.
Why is America great - because we stand for liberty - or because we are powerful?
We are exceptional because we stand for liberty - that is why we have a ‘Statue of Liberty’ - it is also called ‘Liberty Enlightening the World’
We don’t have a statue of ‘Cringing Security.’
Or a statue of ‘Oohh Mommy government please protect us scared servile civilians’
Remember those words - ‘Home of the Brave’ - does that even mean anything anymore?
Brave people stand up for liberty, and take the consequences. We keep our liberty intact and openly defend it. We don’t curl up in a fetal position and beg the FedGov to save us.
And, by the way, more people die in car accidents every year than have ever been killed by a terrorist. Yet why are we so desperately willing to give up our liberty for such a puny, sad little number.
Finally some stats to show what we should be scared of - frankly I laughed when I saw that we’re ‘6 times more likely to die from hot weather than a terrorist attack! Seriously, the wimpification of America has apparently succeeded!
The stats from 2011:
You are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack
You are 12,571 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack
You are 11,000 times more likely to die in an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane
You are 1048 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack
You are 404 times more likely to die in a fall than from a terrorist attack
You are 87 times more likely to drown than die in a terrorist attack
You are 13 times more likely to die in a railway accident than from a terrorist attack
You are 12 times more likely to die from accidental suffocation in bed than from a terrorist attack
You are 9 times more likely to choke to death on your own vomit than die in a terrorist attack
You are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist
You are 8 times more likely to die from accidental electrocution than from a terrorist attack
You are 6 times more likely to die from hot weather than from a terrorist attack
When Hussian disparaged US data gathering on citizens he said something to the effect that “no one is sitting around reading your emails and texts.
He is factually correct. All data is streamed through software for trigger points, ie certain words or patterns that have been determined to be problematic. Those flagged are looked at closely . Then all the information is stored. And can be brought if you are ever in the government’s sights. For whatever reason. All the information is there if they want it. And since they have the information they can massage it and manipulate it if need be. That is why I believe nothing any more that are accusations by the government.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
I’d like Cruz to join until the perfect sweeping of all electronic intercepts of American Citizens who are not under suspicion is suspended.
Link For Rand’s filibuster...though currently someone else is speaking.
