Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said Friday that the death penalty sentence for Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was “ineffective.”

While the likely Democratic presidential candidate said that he “respects the verdict of the jury” and said his prayers go to the victims and their loved ones, he used the occasion to make another statement on his opposition to the death penalty.

“The death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent, and the appeals process is expensive and cruel to the surviving family members,” Mr. O’Malley said, Mediaite reported Friday. Mr. O’Malley added that “the vast majority of public executions” happen in the U.S., North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and China, and said that was a list the U.S. should not be on, Mediaite reported.

I’m betting Tsarnaev won’t do it again.

D’ya think a bullet in the head of a perp, at the time of crime commital, would be a deterrent ?

Yes, but it is the less expensive alternative.

Let’s compare Tsarnev fate to that of released commanders of AlQaeda and the Taliban by Obama. We will just call OMalley another Dukakis.

We’re not going to kill him because it’s a deterrent. We’re going to kill him because it’s justice.

But very satisfactory as a retribution.

“The death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent, and the appeals process is expensive and cruel to the surviving family members".

All because of O'Malley and his liberal America hating ilk. They oppose the death penalty because they themselves have made the appeals process expensive and long, all the while being cruel themselves to the surviving family members.

The death penalty is 100% effective as a deterrent.

A dead murderer will not commit another murder.

dead = gone = good

When there is absolutely no doubt of guilt, as in this case, there should be no right to repeal. As soon as the sentence is handed down, they should be executed. Letting this type of criminal live is, well, Criminal!

I have read enough studies of the subject to conclude that the death penalty isn’t much of a deterrent.

One particular study, I cannot recall which one, documented a proliferation of pickpockets at a hanging for a pickpocket.

But, deterrent isn’t the idea. Punishment is. And, no recidivism is a good thing.

Flush this filth ASAP.

Agreed. The way the death penalty is implemented is not a deterrent.
The death penalty needs to be public so that potential offenders will fully understand and remember what will happen if they murder someone or commit a terrorist act.

‘Death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent’

Not so, it certainly cuts recidivism to zero!

The death penalty is NOT a deterrent.

It is an eliminator.

Seems to work rather well for them - but they don’t wait 10 years to carry it out.

and I wonder if he would say the same to a perp who, say raped and killed his daughter.

Think of the insult this idiot gives to families of those murdered by this killer.
