Talk about a dumb CHP (of the same persuasion as the funeral goers)!

Not only did he make a fool out of himself, but he caused an even bigger traffic jam than the funeral procession itself.

Methinks that CHPs will be backpedaling fast come Monday morning.

Lived in California in a previous life and drove on the 10 many, many times. Much of that time, you were lucky to manage a steady 20 mph once you were west of San Gabriel or thereabouts.

The running joke was that you could go 10 mph on the 10 or 210 mph on the 210.

How could a funeral home be so stupid as to use a freeway instead of a quieter side road?

CHP Officer Pulls Over Funeral Procession on the 10 Freeway for Traveling Too Slow

They were really "Traveling Too Slow" once he stopped them.

I support the idea, if not this particular stop. As a truck driver I can, once I get up to the bottleneck, see the one or two cars that are causing the traffic jam. Normally it is one person who left for work early to “beat traffic” and driving in the middle lane. Everyone has to slow down to get around the jerk. Once past that person traffic moves well until we come up to the traffic jam caused by the first person’s soul mate. I have seen it countless times coming through Chicago in morning rush hour.

I am willing to bet that daily traffic jams are caused by the same people again and again. If they start to get tickets for impeding traffic things will start to flow much better.

from National Funeral Directors Association:

Section 101-03. Driving in Funeral Procession
  1. Operators of vehicles in a funeral procession must exercise due care when participating in a funeral procession.

  2. A vehicle in a funeral procession shall follow the preceding vehicle in the funeral procession as closely as is practicable and safe. Any ordinance, law, or regulation requiring that motor vehicles be operated to allow sufficient space between them to enable another vehicle to enter and occupy that space without danger shall not be applicable to vehicles in a funeral procession.

  3. The operator of a motor vehicle in a funeral procession may not drive the vehicle at a speed greater than:
    1. 55 miles per hour on a highway where the posted speed limit is 55 miles per hour or more; or

    2. 5 miles per hour below the posted speed limit on other streets or road.

  4. A vehicle being operated in any funeral procession must have its headlights and tail lights illuminated.

  5. The turn signals must be flashing simultaneously as warning lights on a vehicle that is the first vehicle in a funeral procession and which the operator has reason to believe is the last vehicle in the funeral procession.

The CHP officer was pulling over one bike for pulling out into the slow lane and stopping cars in that lane, endangering the rest of the users on the freeway by creating a sudden stop in one lane, and a corresponding danger of that traffic jumping into the open lanes of traffic at a much slower speed.

That the rest of the procession pulled over as well is the stupid part, that they continually ignored that the officer told them to move on is compounding that stupidity.

The CHP has fully backed the officer who handled a traffic citation quickly under strong pressure from uninvolved people. Traffic guides who accompany funeral processions fully know what they can and can’t do - stopping traffic on surface streets? No problem. Stopping a lane of traffic on the freeway? They know that is forbidden.

What an odd story. You’re right that the cop only aggravated the situation. I would have thought he grab the license plate of the lead vehicle and take it up with the director later. There was zero need for an “intervention”.

Interesting state law survey here:
http://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2014/07/03/251323.htm

“CALIFORNIA: The only law California has regarding funeral processions prohibits anyone from disregarding any traffic signal or direction given by a peace officer in uniform authorized to escort a procession. Cal. Veh. Code § 2817.”

I sometimes get annoyed when I’m held up by a funeral procession,
then I remember this is the last ride the deceased is going to take.
