During a conversation about poverty, President Obama said he was concerned that more wealthy people were separated from poverty because they chose to frequent private institutions instead of public ones.
Part of whats happened is, is that elites in a very mobile, globalized world are able to live together, away from folks who are not as wealthy, and so they feel less of a commitment to making those investments, he explained during a panel discussion on poverty at Georgetown University today.
Obama criticized the free-market system in America for allowing higher concentrations of wealth to exist among the rich while the bottom percentage was being left behind and receiving a smaller portion of that wealth.
Those who are doing better and better, more skilled, more educated, luckier having greater advantages are withdrawing from the commons, he said. Kids start going to private schools, kids start working out at private clubs instead of the public parks, an anti-government ideology then disinvests from those common goods and those things that draw us together.
That led fewer people to care about public institutions, Obama explained, leading to government cuts to important public functions making the nation less equal.
Obama insisted that there needed to be more investments in public schools, public universities, public early child education and public infrastructure, insisting that funding these organizations both grows our economy and spreads it around.

FUBO!!
What an a$$hole. He continues to amaze me.
Like the Obamas?
Gee where does Sasha and Malia go to school..Yep you guessed it..PRIVATE SCHOOL
He sends his own kids to a private school.
Communism does not grow the economy. It has been tried and it failed.
But it’s OK if they are wealthy Democrats (think Marion Wright Edelman, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al and Tipper Gore, the Kennedys, the Obamas themselves, etc, etc).
It’s not only HE that amazes me,
it’s the sheeperal that excuse this BS
that amaze and infuriate me more.
This guy is pathetic.
There have been haves and have-nots since the beginning of mankind.
That’s the way it is and the way it will remain.
.
WP= wealthy privelege. Guess obie and chippie will be pullin’ the girls out of sidwell and puttin’ them in PS101. No? That’s just weird.
So he’s going to pull his kids out of Sidwell Friends?
He could criticize people wearing ties while wearing a tie and the left would eat it up.
You mean “Private Schools” like Sidwell Friends, that Obama’s kids go to that costs $35,000+ a year?
A brave reporter would have asked, If Obama really feels that way, why aren’t his OWN kids in the DC Public Schools?
Or Rahm Emanuel’s kids in Chicago Public Schools, instead of a Private school that costs $26,000 per?
Well, ya know, like, he’s the president and all, and his kids HAVE to go to, like, private school & stuff.
For their safety.
Like your kids, Zerohissef? Heck, they even eat better than the po po public skool cheerens.
FUBO!
What a despicable sack of crap he is....
We should tell him we will give him all the surplus money after the public debt is paid. That should hold him off for the rest of his life.
He could have sent his girls to public school like Jimmy Carter sent Amy.
There are a lot of middle class people who work hard and sacrifice so that they can send their children to private schools; it isn’t just “the wealthy” (like you, Obama) who send their children to private schools.
Actually, they are HELPING the poor by privately paying for their own kids’ education while STILL paying property and other taxes into public schools.
Well that could be sure way to cure liberals of liberalism. Send the bulk of their children to some inner city schools so they can experience the breadth and vibrancy of chaotic, violent classrooms. Some of them might even get through the school year without being physically assaulted.
