The sun is almost completely blank. The main driver of all weather and climate, the entity which occupies 99.86% of all of the mass in our solar system, the great ball of fire in the sky has gone quiet again during what is likely to be the weakest sunspot cycle in more than a century. The sun's X-ray output has flatlined in recent days and NOAA forecasters estimate a scant 1% chance of strong flares in the next 24 hours. Not since cycle 14 peaked in February 1906 has there been a solar cycle with fewer sunspots. We are currently more than six years into Solar Cycle 24 and the current nearly blank sun may signal the end of the solar maximum phase. Solar cycle 24 began after an unusually deep solar minimum that lasted from 2007 to 2009 which included more spotless days on the sun compared to any minimum in almost a century.

From BBC News [yr: 2004]:
"A new [2004] analysis shows that the Sun is more active now than it has been at anytime in the previous 1,000 years. Scientists based at the Institute for Astronomy in Zurich used ice cores from Greenland to construct a picture of our star's activity in the past. They say that over the last century the number of sunspots rose at the same time that the Earth's climate became steadily warmer."..."In particular, it has been noted that between about 1645 and 1715, few sunspots were seen on the Sun's surface.
This period is called the Maunder Minimum after the English astronomer who studied it. It coincided with a spell of prolonged cold weather often referred to as the "Little Ice Age". Solar scientists strongly suspect there is a link between the two events - but the exact mechanism remains elusive."

“The [(Danish) National Space] Institute is also investigating the connection between variations in solar activity and changes in the global average temperature. Solar activity directly influences the amount of cosmic radiation released through the Suns magnetic field and entering the Earths atmosphere, and the researchers are examining whether there is a connection between the flux of cosmic rays and the formation of clouds in the Earths atmosphere.”

I've been raked over coals for saying this. And I have no proof or science. I have reviewed the formulas that "prove" faster than SOL is not possible. But the formula relies on assumed variables. The formula (if I remember correctly) says that faster than the SOL = Time travel. I say, yea, it's why we can't detect it. It happens ahead of an observable occassion. Duh! LOL
They’ll try to call it the Global Warming Minimum, ‘cause they will tell us this time of cold weather is the result of our failing to deal with all the man-made, carbon fueled heat in the first place.
“It’s all fault of the Climate Change Deniers!!”
Let me get this straight. When the sun puts out less radiation, the earth is not as warm? Is this 2nd grade science?
Solar radiation and the solar activity associated with sunspots, CMEs, flares, etc, are two different things. This type of solar activity is MAGNETIC in nature. The SA vs Earth temps relationship is not a direct one. See my earlier posts for an explanation.
Just sold my stock in Coppertone.....
Actually, just read again the paragraph you quoted:
“In addition, research studies in just the past couple of decades have found a complicated relationship between solar activity, cosmic rays, and clouds on Earth. This research suggests that in times of low solar activity where solar winds are typically weak; more cosmic rays reach the Earths atmosphere which, in turn, has been found to lead to an increase in certain types of clouds that can act to cool the Earth.”
Expect another ice age....life will be cold, short and brutish
Don’t know about the rest of you, but here in the Northeast US, we’ve had the coldest winter and spring in a very long time.
Did the Feb. 1906 peak cause the San Francisco earthquake? Or was it San Andreas’ fault?
Frickin’ frackin’ somewhere in the midwest?
Gluteus maximus minimums are the most destructive, I read
I didn’t know that the sun could affect temperatures on earth, and I refuse to believe it. Nobel Prize winner Al Gore told me otherwise. We have it on the best authority that global temperatures are driven by cow flatulence and SUVs - the science is settled. And science is about authority or consensus, not evidence. Isn’t it?
But the relationship they're talking about here is not to do with changes in heat output from the sun itself, but rather an indirect link between MAGNETIC solar activity (sun spots, etc) and cloud cover on Earth. In short, more magnetic solar activity = less clouds, more sunlight, and higher temps.
The same NOAA that’s been publishing phony temperature data, right? No, thanks, I want nothing nada zippo to do with them.
Add: Dick Cheney and Karl Rove (that magnificent bast@rd!)
Yes....this must be why my car travels many fewer miles/gallon at speed 120 than at 40 ;)
Yeah, but at least you've aged more slowly in the process. Einstein's theory also states that clocks in motion tick out time at a slower rate than static clocks.
