Under Governor Scott Walker's leadership, Wisconsin will join eleven other states as the newest state to require welfare recipients to pass a drug test before they can receive state welfare funds.
While some liberals and liberal-minded religious groups have called out Walker for "targeting" the poor and those with addictions, Walker's response has been spot on: if they're receiving funds from the state, the state should be able to make rules for these people to live by before they can receive a dime.
But Walker's drug test isn't simply a play to restrict the number of people who will be eligible to receive welfare, it's also a giant step forward in changing unemployment payments from helping freeloaders live off of the work of others to payments which will actually help others prepare to receive employment.
Walker's reasoning is solid. Most, if not all, employers will require a drug test for new employees and by letting people know that unemployment and welfare are just a stepping stone for those who want to receive funds.
The religious groups that oppose the change to welfare state that the change will unnecessarily target the poor and those with addictions. Walker's has the perfect and correct response, however. He says that the state of Wisconsin, by identifying those welfare recipients who have a problem with drugs, will be able to help those people with their addictions and get them back into the workforce faster.
It is innately outrageous, however, that people would take offense with Wisconsin setting benchmarks and tests for people to have to qualify for state funds. You don't argue with a bank when they set rules for you to abide by if you borrow money from them. There's really no difference with welfare funds.
If people looked at welfare like real money being given to them by hardworking people, perhaps they'd be able to see the genius behind Walker's welfare reform. He's taking a huge step forward.
Yesterday morning I went to mail a letter. My route through my small town passes directly by one of the three public housing complexes here still left over from LBJ’s Great Society debacle.
As I passed by, I saw a placard posted on a telephone pole at the entrance that said “Katy’s Baby Shower” with an arrow pointing inward to the project.
The thing about these projects is you don’t see any of them occupied by husbands and wifes. Only baby mammas. To be sure, there’s often some baby daddy living there, but he ain’t got rang on that finger, nor she.
So Katy is gonna drop another one at the only hospital here. We citizens are gonna pick up the tab, and Katy gonna requalify for WICS, SNAP, more EITC because of the dependent (new baby), more housing (free) and all that other stuff for another 5 years or so.
Katy don’t want no inconvenience, though. She’s having a baby shower!
[As a side note, my county is 96% white, 1% black, and 3% other (2010 Census), and the residents there reflect it - sloth is color blind]
How many half sibs procreate since few of them even know their father?
They literally are turning themselves into a human puppy mill.
These liberals and liberal-minded religious groups will complain...but they will NEVER open their wallets to help their beloved parasites. They always want someone else to pay for them.
>> Impose a weight limit for food stamps.
Given the impact of diabetes, impose a carb limit.
Scott WAlkers new budget requires drug test for welfare and food stamp recipients.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
My cousin proposed many years ago that we stop paying after two kids. Have as many as you want but the government will stop paying after 2 kids. I agree.
But how does it compare with national employment growth? One important measure is the percentage of the employable population that is actually employed, what the Bureau of Labor Statistics calls the employment-population ratio. The U.S. employment-population ratio has grown 1.5% since Mr. Walker took charge.
Yet Wisconsins employment-population ratio has jumped 2.5%significantly more than the national improvement rate. Wisconsin is also gaining ground against other states. In February 2011 Wisconsin ranked 12th in employment-population ratio. It now ranks ninth......"
Suppose I wanted to organize a riot or civil demonstration on short notice? Where the heck would find anyone to riot if everybody in the 'hood was working, training for work, or out doing odd jobs.
An important White Privilege is to enable People of Colour to have a quaint and colorful lifestyle and have time to express themselves. Noblesse Oblige!
Testing will probably produce enough druggies to balance the loss of food stamps etc. Mr. Walker is one brave man, seems he is beholden to no one unlike Obama, who puts (unions over students.)
Greetings. Therefore, organizing a conservative protest is hard because everyone is working, or not willing to take a day off to protest.
Welfare, as it is now, is a waste of human potential. It forces people to not work, and makes it difficult to get off befcause so many programs will cut them off cold turkey if the do get a job.
An exercise requirement would be better. Also, require social workers to set an example. Periodical PT tests would do it.
And I am seeing more and more so called out of work types standing near most street intersections where a stop light is begging for money/selling some paper. The truth is these are addicts. They will not work. They are not veterans as many claim. They are addicts.
PT tests for police, teachers, regulators and administrators, too. We don’t pay them to be slobs.
People in town knew who deserved welfare and who didn't.
