WASHINGTON After Baltimores first round of rowdy protests on Saturday, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake came under fire for saying that the city gave people who wished to destroy space to do so.
I worked with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech, Rawlings-Blake said to the media Saturday evening.
Its a very delicate balancing act because while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well.
On Monday, at another news conference on the riots that broke out in the streets following Freddie Grays funeral, Rawlings-Blake said she was misunderstood.
Im going to protect peoples right to protest, she said. The fact that people exploited that does not mean that I do not have an obligation to protect peoples right to protest. I never said, nor would I ever say, that we are giving people space to destroy our city. So my words should not be twisted.
Gray, who was 25, died on April 19 one week after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while in police custody.
Demonstrations have been nearly constant in the city ever since, and destructive riots broke out after his funeral on Monday. At least 15 officers were hurt Monday, including six who remained hospitalized late in the day, and two dozen people were arrested. Several buildings were burned, as well.
“we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that”
That’s a direct quote.
Can’t Democrats tell the truth about anything?
She misspoke. Fine. Admit the mistake. Tell people what she said that was wrong. Clarify what you meant. Set the record straight.
Don’t just outright lie about a quote.
That she clearly is.
The really disquieting thing is that cops followed the order to go out there and do nothing but witness as the law is violated and property is destroyed and lives endangered. None had the manhood insist they be free to do their jobs or be pulled out entirely.
Shouldn’t this affirmative-action mayor be resigning immediately and leaving the city? What incompetence.
Heard the police spokesman in Baltimore say that “no one expects us to come in with tanks against 13 year olds.”
Ferguson on a bigger stage. Baltimore is following the path of Detroit.
And she thinks people will only believe her now.
She gave the go ahead
Obama told her to
Had she been serious, she wouldn’t have waited 5 hours to call the NG in. Of course, that was to discredit the White, RINO governor and make him the guilty party.
The only thing that was twisted is what subs as her thinking process. She confirmed, by refusing to enact the curfew last night, her own words and exactly what she meant by them. This moron should be fired or forced to step down immediately. Hell, promote Sheriff Clarke. He’d make a helluva good mayor.
[I think she ‘hoped’ the agitation would burn itself out and everyone would get tired and go home when it got dark. She apparently didn't watch any news regarding Ferguson and those riots.]
Yes she did...I HEARD AND SAW HER SAY IT!
I'm wondering if it was Obama who coerced the mayor and the police chief to have the police stand-down. And her statement was a Freudian Slip because she knew what standing down would bring.
Just trying to bring you back to reality.
Well, I cant help it. It is my take on what the knucklehead said.
Gaffe - Inadvertently saying what you really think.
A thirteen year old with an AK-47 or an RPG is more dangerous than a grown man.
Double Freudian slip?
Did she really mean to give them the room to destroy but wanted to cover up by saying demonstrate? Only to slip up and say "Destroy" instead of "Demonstrate"?
Why not? It has worked for most every corrupt politician since time began.
