Disrespect if not outright ignorance of national pride, patriotism, and sovereignty are de rigeur in most of the world. Many Europeans come to the US and notice almost immediately how many flags there are everywhere. They say that’s just not common anywhere in Europe.
Most Europeans I know and with whom I work say that the national anthem being sung before every sporting event is “bordering on cult-like” and they eschew our practices as anachronistic and “backwards thinking.”

According to the United States Flag Code, “When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.” Unless a military member in uniform, citizens should stand at ‘salute’ by placing their hand over their heart, facing the American Flag.
