You ask them, then they ask,in their name, all the big search engines like google, Bing, Jeeves, etc, which send Ixquick the results. Then Ixquick sends them to you......I guess?

That is what I suspected. If you delete it the only person who is denied access to it is yourself.
There aren't too many open proxies that you can trust. I don't know any, for example. Of course, proxies come included with TOR and I2P, but TOR seems to be compromised, and I2P is too complex for a common man to set up.
