Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me.
Well, what can be done to deal with this? What can government, or private real estate developers, do to make housing more affordable, that hasn’t been tried already?
It’s the free market at work, when you see some areas have high housing costs.
Rentals under $1,000 in Dallas/Ft Worth:

The cost of living is high in leftist governed cities.
The average rent in San Francisco is over $2,800.
Is this the reason they are all queers?
Well, if you're an AIDS virus, I'm sure it's prime real estate.
using 1/3 of income for rent yields an income of $100,000. normally that would mean two income earners with decent jobs.
I like the weather here, the employment salary is very high, our property value goes up about $5000 per year, getting out is great, beach at Santa Cruz is one hour, wine country and redwoods one hour, Yosemite 4 hours, the ocean I can hear from my back yard. Great neighbors. Lots of excellent restaurants... lots of reasons to live here.
Where else can you roll down your car window and smell homeless, tourists, liebrals and marijuana advocates at the same time?
I’m thinking Austin .. But.. SF leads the way.
Sounds like life is good for you there.
I think people on this site focus on the politics of the Bay Area, as making that area undesirable.
Only 5000 a year. Chump change . :-)
Actually it is not the free market. Building restrictions, environmental regulations, and cronyism combined with housing vouchers (Section 8), price and rent controls conspire to keep prices of property and rents high.
Is this the reason they are all queers?
No that is not true, about 7% of the SF population is so your percentage is off by a long shot. I nor my wife are gay either.
I am not sure your logic of the reason rent is high is because all here are queers?
It’s a beautiful city. I lived there for 10 years in the 70s and 80s and loved it, but I wouldn’t today, even if I could afford it.
“Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me.”
I was thinking the same thing early last evening after a sumptuous supper at the Rutherford Grill in the Napa Valley (smoked salmon, wedge salad, and a french dip gourmet sandwich), the wife and I drove across the Valley to the Silverado Trail and headed back down to Napa through the beautiful, manicured vineyards, just now leafing out. Then for a moment, I superimposed this picture on my last trip to Graham, Texas, and then I realized that I am the “anyone who would like to live here.” We live here and pay the freight because it’s worth it! I feel sorry for anyone who is so twisted up about the current politics that they fail the smell the roses, or even know how to do so. It must be indeed a sorry mindset that prevents you from seeing any good anywhere.
For starters why post the short blurb which cites the original Forbes article?
Putting that aside, neither specifies what that ‘average rent’ means. Average what? Studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, penthouse with terrace? Both SF and Manhattan have apts renting at five figures and up per month, making avg meaningless both as to cost and vacancy rates.
Forbes is really slipping.
Im thinking Austin .. But.. SF leads the way.”
One of my friends recently returned from a visit to Hawaii for her one and only trip. She’s from Austin and wondered why she had spent so much money to go somewhere that was so much like where she came from - homeless, tourists and liberals in abundance, just like home.
