Scott Walker backs pathway to citizenship at private dinner

p class="zn-body__paragraph">Washington (CNN)Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker endorsed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants during a private dinner with Republican leaders in New Hampshire two weeks ago, backing away from the more hard-line position he has staked out in public and obscuring where he stands on the hot-button issue.

At a March 13 dinner at the Copper Door Restaurant in Bedford organized by New Hampshire GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Horn, Walker, a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, was asked how he would address the problem of roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.

After he declared that securing the United States border with Mexico is "our first priority," Walker said that undocumented immigrants now residing in the country could "secure their citizenship" as long as they "get in the back of line" and wait like anyone else applying for citizenship.

The comments, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, were relayed to CNN by a Republican briefed on the dinner who did not want to be identified.

During a question-and-answer session, Walker said that undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States should not be deported, the Republican source said.

Though Walker once supported a path to citizenship as part of comprehensive immigration overhaul, his New Hampshire comments are at odds with more recent assurances that he opposes what he calls "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants. Walker admitted in a Fox News interview earlier this month that he changed his position on the issue.

The newly-reported comments are also in conflict with the sentiments of many conservatives who hold sway in Republican primaries and

Last election cycle we were told Romney had changed his position on abortion. I don’t believe him. Now we are being told Walker has supposedly changed his position on amnesty. I don’t think we can trust anyone who changes their position on such important matters just so they can appeal to the conservative base, and I never will.

Yep, he does. He makes it now officially 4 that I have permanently scratched off.

I am down to only one I could voter for and that is Cruz. I fear though that all the R’s are now gonna dilute the primary voting and Boosh will collect the banner, then kiss face, make nice with Billary.

Read the article. That is exactly what Walker said. “Get to the end of the line...”

There should be no "line" for illegals here. No chance for citizenship if you've been living here as an invader.

That’s what I’ve been saying all along. The conservatives need to winnow down to no more than two before the primaries start then only one at the second group. Barring that, I am hoping that a couple of them will take themselves out of conservative contention. Walker and Rubio seem to be doing that. I hope they do it a little more loudly, though.

He didn’t say anything about them going home and applying according to our laws. Besides, he has had mutiple positions on this.

Thanks Arthurus. I’m glad we can agree.

My fear once the delegate accumulation starts, is that Bush will stand alone as the best Lefty, and the others will split.

If we start with two, that’s still splitting. It would be nice if one would quickly drop out and hand off his delegates, but some of these guys think they owe their constituents.

It’s very strange that some of these guys either don’t hand off, or when they do it’s to the most different guy, the biggest Lefty.

Walker admitted in a Fox News interview earlier this month that he changed his position on the issue.

He didn't change his position, just his rhetoric.

But, there have always been rules and the government has always enforced them -- until Obama.

No one has enforced immigration laws since Dwight Eisenhower did Operation Wetback.

Does Walker want to join the Rubio, Corpus, Jeb side?

Sure looks like it. The sooner he gets out of Ted's way, the better.

Walkerbots to deny he has ever supported amnesty in 3...2...1.

When shown Walkers quotes and legislation he supported....they will quickly tout his his Whitehouse Road conversion!

"He wasn’t at the actual wedding."

I know, he was at the reception. But for me, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. It's still a celebration of the wedding itself.

Then Walker should renounce the report as inaccurate and fully articulate his position.

Maybe so but that is letting the Left set the agenda.

I know what you mean. I've often made that argument too. A candidate shouldn't respond to every poorly sourced report.

But this poorly sourced report, on a major "network" CNN, about such an important subject, might be a time to respond.

You are messing up Scott. The only “path” to citizenship is the same old path that other immigrants have to take. We should not give a reward to lawbreakers.

As I said before, I am for Ted Cruz... however, Scott Walker is out a bad choice if I have to vote for him. As a constitutional conservative, I am for limited government.
