Gwyneth Paltrow is slashing her food budget to raise awareness about hunger. But sometimes even the best intentions are met with criticism, eye rolls and sarcasm.

Last week, the Oscar winner announced that she had accepted The Food Bank for New York City challenge to live on food stamps for one week, with a grocery budget of $29 or about $1.38 per meal.

According to the #FoodBankNYCChallenge, needy families are given $29 per person as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, after Congress cut food stamps twice since 2013.

Once Paltrow accepted the challenge, she tweeted a picture of her $29 in food choices — brown rice, black beans, peas, eggs, tortillas, cilantro, limes and fresh vegetables.

But apparently the tweet left a bad taste, with many Twitter users eating the “Iron Man” star alive.

“Vast difference living on food stamps for 1 week knowing you’ve a safety net of millions, and that being your life every day Gwyneth Paltrow,” tweeted one person.

Cilantro and limes?

Delicious! The citrus juice, added to the chopped green herb, jazzes up a dish.

The whole exercise is based on the flawed premise that food stamps are intended to cover the entire grocery budget. AFAIK the purpose of the program is to supplement the food budget, not replace it.

I eat like a king for about $35/week. Mind you, having a neighbour who is a personal friend of a butcher certainly helps :)

“These Hollyweird types think that just by doing something like this empathizes with people living on the edge.”

Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Its her money. Her motives are her own; but again its her money. She actually shows you can buy a lot of food for a small amount of money if done smartly.
Many food stamp recipients would spend the $29 on sugared soft drinks alone.

Also overpriced. Around here limes are usually about 40 cents and are often on special for 20 cents.

I don’t think DOLTrow eats meat. There is probably more than meets the eye with her stunt.

Yes,, but you have to flavor your food with something & lime juice is better for you than vinegar or Worcestershire sauce. I use it often.

What rich Gweny doesn’t know is that IFyou have $29 for food you DO NOT buy arugala, eggs, leeks to eat. You buy beans and rice, maybe eggs, milk, a block of cheese, bags of potatoes, onions, apples and see maybe some chicken thighs

"I wonder why those commie bastards in comments to the article are so infuriated?"

Because she is inadvertently proving it can be done easily rather than showing she will starve to death. I mean, you won't be able to eat the way you want, but it is possible... and that's what the program is for; to help keep people from starving, nothing more.

No, he wasn’t LOL and the person who said “ I want to get rich..” was a woman. We learned this clown prof kept forcing students to do this every semester hoping they’ll change their major to community organizer or something similar.

“... brown rice, black beans, peas, eggs, tortillas, cilantro, limes and fresh vegetables. ...”

I think she just stepped on Moo’s toes on that one. Moo’s mandated lunches and meals demand that those foods be ingested by the unwashed masses. Moo knows all!

Most of the leftists who claim the amount is too small forget the part about "per person". For a family of 4 the subsidy is $116, and as is immediately apparent that is quite a lot of food.

You don’t get fat what happens is one week you get a bag of potatoes that will last two or three weeks.(etc) that allows one to occasionally get meat.

Paltrow has NEVER had to budget for ANYTHING. You don’t buy pricey vegetables when ordinary ones will do just fine
