General Motors will stop making the Chevrolet Volt for four weeks in June and July due to slow sales and to deal with the change to an all-new version of the gas-electric hybrid car.
The company says the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that makes the Volt and four other cars will probably stay open through the summer despite plans for the Volt. The factory also is undergoing construction so it can build a new full-size Cadillac CT6 and the 2016 Volt starting late in the summer.
Sales of electric and hybrid cars have slowed this year, largely due to low gasoline prices. The national average for a gallon of regular gas was about $2.40 US on Thursday, 35 per cent lower than last year's peak of $3.70.
The cheap gas has really hurt Volt sales and caused inventory to build on dealer lots. Through March, GM sold only 1,874 Volts, down 48 per cent from a year ago. The company now has enough Volts to supply dealers for 210 days, according to Ward's Automotive. A 60-day supply is optimal.

“1,874 Volts sole for the 1st 3 months! LOL! “
Back when GM was a PRIVATE COMPANY that would have mattered. I suspect that companies even in RUSSIA are better held accountable for performance.

I believe we also financed the plug in stations.
This is exactly what I would expect from a company run by Barack Obama.

I look forward to new battery technology. Right now the choice is a very heavy lead/acid trolling motor battery, hiked up the dock & 1/4 mile to a charger, or alight weight Li battery at $900 that might burn up when charging.
SHOCKING! The Volt had such POTENTIAL. It was leading the CHARGE for eco friendly transportation. I guess the POSITIVE couldn’t outweigh the NEGATIVE. The CURRENT trends in lower gas prices led to RESISTANCE in new sales.... OK, I’ll quit...
The Kelly Blue Book value for a 2013 Volt in excellent condition is only $17,400.
Fail!
I just cannot take the BATTERY of puns!
From that article:
“We give consumers the incentive to buy these cars,” White House economic chief Gene Sperling said at a budget briefing where he announced the 33% increase from the current $7,500 subsidy. The budget document, titled “Investing in Our Future,” includes a goal of putting “1 million advanced technology vehicles on the road (by) 2015.”
Don’t know one way or the other on that but for 1 1/2 years or so GM were leasing more Volts than they were selling, they had a deal that was hard to refuse. Now those leased cars are on the used car market.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, Dodge Hellcats have outsold the Volt, and Dodge cannot keep up with demand.
It’s pretty bad when they cannot sell the cars even when they pay you $10,000 to buy one.
Pathetic.
>> a real advancement in genetic engineering could, someday, - I guess- make horse-drawn vehicles truly feasible.
lol

The Volt fire scare turned out to be baloney. The fire only happened three weeks after the Volt was crash tested and only because the battery was not de-energized afterwards (kind of like not draining a leaking gas tank after a crash). If you get into a crash and it takes you three weeks to get out of the car, you have bigger problems to worry about.

New Volts are being sold for $30,000 and qualify for around $10,000 in rebates, depending on where you live. So you can basically get a new Volt for $20,000.
