A New York Police Department detective has been suspended after a Brooklyn deli owner uncovered security camera footage that appears to show the officer pocketing nearly $3,000 in cash during a raid earlier this month, police said.
The detective, Ian Cyrus, 49 years old, has been suspended pending an internal affairs investigation into the April 3 incident, NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis said Thursday.
That video combined with an allegation of theft is enough to warrant an investigation, Mr. Davis said. Its good enough to support taking appropriate action at the time. The video is indicative of activity that requires more investigation.
Detective Cyrus didnt immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday and Michael Palladino, president of the Detectives Endowment Association, said that because the investigation is ongoing it is inappropriate to make a statement at this time. The video, obtained by WABC-TV/ABC-7, appears to show a plainclothes detective pulling a box from a bottom shelf, taking out money and putting it into his jacket pocket.
During the narcotics raid at the Yemen Deli, New York City police arrested two men on charges they sold untaxed cigarettes. Detectives took $593 from the delis cash register as forfeiture property, a law-enforcement official said, and the deli manager eventually received a copy of an invoice for that money.
But the manager of Yemen Deli, on Marcus Garvey Boulevard in Brooklyn, also said $2,650 in rent money was taken from a cigar box hidden on a store shelf, the official said. He originally thought a worker might have stolen but security camera footage appeared to show the detective taking the money and putting it in his pocket, Mr. Davis said.

Cops are cash-loving thieves who will shake down law abiding people.right on the sidewalk, if they’re sure they aren’t being watched.
Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but I’m glad we have technology available to weed out the crooks.

So stealing the register cash was legit but stealing the rent money warrants an investigation. What's the difference you might ask? Well the register money went to the political scum slush fund and the rent went right into a crooked cop's pocket. From a citizens point of view that would be no difference at all.
Stop stealing. The government hates competition.
How exactly did the detective know to look in the cigar box? There must be more to this.

If Obama had a detective son...
Another day, another crooked cop exposed. Jails should be filling up with them. Video is sunshine on lying, crooked, and murderous cops. Makes my day! (My father, a retired cop, innocently claims cops didn’t used to lie, steal, or kill. No, I tell him, they just didn’t get caught in past years.)
Gimmedat rent money. His family must be proud of him now.
New York City, where the Democrats rule. These are the typical actions of Democrats.
They send in the government revenue collection agents to arrest the people for selling untaxed cigarettes, as they steal thousands in cash from the store owner?
Ya got to love the people in government.
Video cameras again. But what’s bizarre is this cop knew the store had video all over it, but took it anyway. Talk about emboldened.
This is just out of control blatant and gives one an idea of the extent of government corruption at all levels.
Who said he did? Cops like to fish, so to speak. They have a government license to look at and go through what ever they please.
But I agree, there is likely much more to this, as you can bet this goes on all the time. This was just another one who happened to get caught on video.
What, no dog to shoot?
When you’ve been a cop for many years, you develop a sense of where people hide things.
It legit when the stealing is for the government.
Note that the blue-clown-suit-with-a-shiny-badge-wearing goon was only suspended and not fired. .Gov parasites cannot ever be fired, especially the NY kinds.
Note, he was not arrested for theft right then and there. If Freeper Theoria or bkopto stole over $2500, we would have I can’t breathe moment with the 5-0, without cameras.
like he should , most cops are weak little men with napoleon complex on a power trip because they got bullied as kids and can now be the bully
Lucky they just took the money. I was under the impression selling “untaxed cigarettes” warranted the death penalty.
