The outcry over the death of Walter Scott stems from a video, taken by an anonymous bystander,
that depicts police officer Michael Slager shooting at Scott eight times as he flees. In an interview with Time, however, Scotts brother says that the video may not have come out if the police hadnt initially tried to paint Slager as innocent.
Anthony Scott told Time that he found the circumstances surrounding his brothers death, caused after a routine traffic stop, highly suspicious. When I got there somebody told me that he was gone. And I was like what in the world? What happened? What happened? How did you get killed in a random stop? It just didnt make any sense to me.
Slager initially said that he shot Walter Scott out of fear for his life, claiming that he had taken his stun gun, and police performed CPR immediately on the shooting victim. The video, which Scott said he received at a wake earlier this week, showed otherwise:
He wanted to see what reports were coming from the North Charleston Police Department because of the fact that they may have told the truth, Scott said in an phone interview from home with TIME Wednesday. And when they continued with the lies, he said, I have to come forward.
I was angry. Shocked, Scott said. I said, We have to have that. So that we could prove it was innocent.
Scott credits the bystander and the video with getting Slager charged with murder. I think that if that man never showed the video we would not be at the point that were at right now, he said. The video tells the truth. It would not be so hard for us to prove that this man was running away when you get shot in your back. I mean how can you defend that?
The man who filmed the video has not yet been named.
Looks like an object did hit the ground, when they were in near contact.
Supposedly, there was a struggle over a taser.
However, the dude is running away after that and you can’t just shoot someone in the back.
If he had charged him, different story.
>tinfoil on<
The decedent drove there to lead the cop to the guy with the camera, hoping to get evidence for some kind of abuse lawsuit. Things went sideways and he ended up getting killed.
Did not go at all according to his plan -- but there will be a lawsuit anyway.
>tinfoil off<
That was satire, everybody.
“I understand that running away is not a threat. I have also read several stories of Police over reacting so why would you run away and give them a reason to over react.”
OK, just sit there and maybe get shot.
Seriously, where is this going? Suppose you are black, and you actually HAVE a concealed gun in this situation. Here are your choices.
1. Drop the gun and get shot (numerous times) and definitely killed.
2. Shoot first (don’t forget about the bulletproof vest!) and if you “win”, take your chances in court.
In case 1, you are DEFINITELY dead. In case 2, you might live. I might pick #2 in this situation.
This is a very, very bad road to go down. Justice needs to come down very swiftly and very hard here.
Hmmm
.. because there have been way too many incidents of out of control police playing judge and executioner and the man thought it might be the smartest (and even a reasonable) thing to do under the circumstances? Sorry but with a much greater emphasis on a militarized approach to policing, their reputation is rightfully taking a beating these days
. and shootings like this just confirm what people are already sensing and believing.

As a dirty, farty, balding, old, conservative white man, I will listen to that point of view as a jury member.
Because you are not thinking.
I have never had an outstanding warrant for not paying my child support. I can only guess that he was scared about going to jail.
They said he was dead. Not smart.
Slager’s biggest problem MAY turn out to be his statements after the fact. If he’s found to have deliberately lied afterward by saying that Scott actually had the taser (not merely that he thought he had it), not realizing that the video was forthcoming, the jury will be that much more inclined to ignore the mitigating factors. It’s going to be interesting.
Nice people here.
i did not say he was justified in the shooting.....
i am saying it is odd that the video starts where it does......if there is some left out.....WHY?....in Ferguson the witness statements were told in a way to further a cause.....if video was left out here, you have to ask yourself why??? In that vain, if video is left out, it is a Ferguson type narrative except with video......
Does it not raise questions in anyone else’s mind???....WHY DOES THE VIDEO START WHERE IT DOES??????
seems odd to me......
As a Southerner, I believe this was bigotry. If the guy had been white, I do not believe that cop would have shot his gun. Does this type of bigotry happen elsewhere other than the South? I really wonder if it is a Southern thing as portrayed by tv.
Because it does.
“WHY DOES THE VIDEO START WHERE IT DOES??????”
Well, let’s try to come up with circumstances that explain the part on the video showing getting shot in the back several times and then the cop moving the evidence next to the dying/dead person.
I’m amazingly creative and I got nuthin’.
Why is it odd that people out in public are watching something and then pull out their camera after it starts?
We are lucky to have the video, a murder was caught on film, and the killer would probably have gotten away with it.
What is that you think the police don’t know and is unknown, or that has any relevance, before the video starts ?
Isn’t the great majority of police shootings, of whites?
They tend to run in threes... look for William Wallace to bit the big one soon.
i don’t know anything........it appears odd to me that it starts when it does......my opinion nothing more....
i could ask you the same basic question.....”What is that you think the police know and is known, or that has any relevance, before the video starts ?”
I don’t get the cops strategy of moving the taser closer to the victim’s body while leaving 6 or 8 rounds of brass on the ground from where he shot?

Wait what?
You should really clarify your statement.
Looks like you are saying black guys with concealed weapons when stopped need to shoot first.
He was getting tased.
**********
Okay, why was he getting tased?
Wasn’t he in an altercation with the cop or that’s what I’ve read in some reports.
We don’t really know enough of the facts at this stage to get an accurate picture.
If he was fighting with the cop and the cop tased him and he ran away that isn’t
cause to shoot him, imo.
