Laurence Tribe Fights Climate Case Against Star Pupil From Harvard, President Obama
New York Times ^ | April 6, 2015 | By CORAL DAVENPORT

Laurence H. Tribe, the highly regarded liberal scholar of constitutional law, still speaks of President Obama as a proud teacher would of a star student. “He was one of the most amazing research assistants I’ve ever had,” Mr. Tribe said in a recent interview. Mr. Obama worked for him at Harvard Law School, where Mr. Tribe has taught for four decades.

Many in the Obama administration and at Harvard are bewildered and angry that Mr. Tribe, who argued on behalf of Al Gore in the 2000 Bush v. Gore Supreme Court case, has emerged as the leading legal opponent of Mr. Obama’s ambitious efforts to fight global warming.

Mr. Tribe, 73, has been retained to represent Peabody Energy, the nation’s largest coal company, in its legal quest to block an Environmental Protection Agency regulation that would cut carbon dioxide emissions from the nation’s coal-fired power plants — the heart of Mr. Obama’s climate change agenda.

To many Democrats and professors at Harvard, Mr. Tribe is a traitor. “The administration’s climate rule is far from perfect, but sweeping assertions of unconstitutionality are baseless,” Jody Freeman, director of the environmental law program at Harvard Law School.

Mr. Tribe dismissed the criticism and said that his brief and comments reflect his views as a constitutional scholar, not as a paid advocate for the coal company. “I’m not for sale,” he said. “I’ll say what I believe.”

“I feel very comfortable with my relationship with Peabody,” he added. “Somebody wanted my help and it happened to coincide with what I believe.”

Are there no counter-protesters? Or no counter-protesters that the media is willing to use to illustrate the argument at stake with “iconic imagery”?

“He [King Obama] was one of the most amazing research assistants I’ve ever had,”

Too bad he proved incapable of learning from his own research.

Once in a great while, a lefty accidentally stumbles over common sense.

In the case of Tribe, I’m sure it’s just legal wet-work and purely mercenary in nature.

Probably got Bill Ayres to do the work

“STAR PUPIL? Let’s see those transcripts!”

Notice Tribe did not say Obama was a star pupil. Those are the reporter’s words. Tribe’s quote was; “He was one of the most amazing research assistants I’ve ever had,”

In other words Obama performed Tribe’s grunt work. Tribe told him to go to the library, or on the internet to look up something, make a copy and bring it back. He didn’t say Obama was a great thinker, a great scholar, or a great student. If he meant to praise Obama’s work as a research assistant, he is merely indicating Obama can follow direction well.

Also, notice the adjective Tribe chose — “amazing” and how he used it in the sentence. Amazing doesn’t necessarily mean good or excellent in this sentence. The dictionary definition of amazing is “causing great surprise or sudden wonder”. Tribe may have actually found Obama to be inept. Using the word “amazing” in this context may sound nice, but really indicate Tribe was extremely surprised at Obama’s incompetence.

Liberals, particularly those from academia, are extremely skillful at selecting words meant to obfuscate what they really mean. If Tribe intended to praise Obama’s intellect, reasoning ability, and academic talent he would likely have phrased his “compliment” differently. After all, we know Obama distinguished himself at Harvard Law School as the editor of the law review who could not be bother to write anything for the publication. Perhaps even Obama, as editor, realized his own writings were not of the caliber to be published.

If he was a “star pupil”(whatever the heck that means. Was he like popular with white girls for example?), where is his magna cum laude and his US Supreme Court briefs/oral arguments at? Ted Cruz says “Hello”.

It sure as Hell wasn't because of his intelligence or industriousness. He must have been scoring weed for Tribe.

Those are the reporter’s words.

"Bonfire of the Vanities" comes to mind. Actually, now that I think about it, it was quite a prescient storyline with variations seen with saints Skittles & Swisher.

“He was one of the most amazing research assistants I’ve ever had,”

Very open ended. "Amazing" has a number connotations. I wonder if BHO had a hand in Tribe's plagiarism problem(s)?

Sounds like one of those strategically ambiguous recommendations that former employers give so that they can't be liable for claims of libel or slander, such as:

“Barry Obama is definitely a man to watch. You won’t find many people like him. You’ll be lucky to get Barry to work for you. I don’t think he could have done a better job for us if he had tried. No salary would be too much for him.”
