Donna Riley, an engineering professor at Virginia Tech, visited the University Monday to discuss gender-based violence in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Riley discussed and analyzed the engineering, academic and broader U.S. cultures which work together to deny gender-based violence.
Riley said gender-based violence not only includes rape, but also stalking, intimate partner violence, harassment, non-consensual sexual contact, verbal abuse and misogynist hate crimes.
In the Survey of Academic Field Experiences published by science journal PLOS One in 2014, Riley said two-thirds of women surveyed reported being the victim of sexual harassment while researching in a scientific field, and 26 percent reported being sexually assaulted, usually by senior members of the research team.
Riley said men in the field experienced harassment and sexual assault as well, but chose to focus her talk on women.

Nonsense. Probably just the opposite.
I recall one very attractive female engineer who walked around barefoot at work (what man could get away with that?), who pursued and bedded as many good looking male co-workers as she could. I didn’t fall into that category unfortunately!
(Depressing because suddenly I couldn't even get ugly girls anymore!!)
But violence against them? By other STEM male students? No way on earth. Any geek driving away the few females around would have been subject to all kinds of creative technological hell.
Shut up and teach!
This is what she does teach.
I’d like to report on anti-Religious murder in the Humanities Departments, specifically African-American Studies Centers’ Lesbian and Questioning Units among Capricorns. The Virgos are fine.
I’ve never seen it as a man in the field but have gotten very close to many females.
It does seem to eventually happen to every attractive co-worker but only in situations where nobody can see or prove anything. Engineers aren’t dumb after all
I’ve never heard of straight up rape but groping, holding and/or sticking hands down clothes does happen.
A small percentage of men are assholes and eventually a lady in our open society will end up alone with one. I tell them to never be alone around someone they aren’t familiar with. That’s good advice anywhere, not just in STEM. It’s just like not walking the streets with a pack of $100s hanging out.
All in all the feminists final goal here is to put men in their place permenantly, even if it means genocide of men.
They want to lock all men up for just staring at a woman, welcome to the new brave world were sex will be outlawed and procreation will be done with test tubes.
The end game here is to destroy all men from the face of the world.
I’m sure these things happen just as frequently, if not more, in non-STEM fields. Of course, STEM will be demonized because it’s male-heavy.
I remember my Circuits class at LSU. I was the only chick in a class of 300. Good times, good times.
Statistics are a funny thing and it’s impossible to say more/less.
I think there is just a percentage of men who can’t control themselves and eventually the opportunity arises where they lose it.
Has nothing to do with STEM or anything else. Just a matter of someone like that being alone with an attractive female. And STEM does seem susceptible to that due to a high possibility of working late hours alone without any surveillance.
You are FOS.
I’m just telling you.
Possibly. I work in STEM too (computer science). In my field, lots of men have trouble getting up the nerve just to talk to an attractive woman.
Good insight, and very true.
Thinking back, we had a few Middle Eastern guys who probably thought that way.
The farm boy crew (of which I was a founding member) made it quite clear we protect our own, and have access to pork.
But after freshmen year they all were gone to other programs. Our bigger issue was some of the girls who thought that by smiling we would do their work for them.
“Im just telling you.”
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Seriously, do you really think engineers come from cultures that don’t respect women? Why just this morning when I told my wife what you had posted, I interrupted her cooking and cleaning duties, took a slight pause from my usual routine of berating her and ordered her to laugh with me at what you wrote.
You should find whomever told you that and give them a wedgie.
The feminists false rape charges or false assault charges is a means to justify the ends and their final solution for men.
Hope fair minded women wake up in time to realize they are being lied to before it’s to late for men.
Nice vid!
(Google knows I’m old, I’m getting adverts for Del Webb retirement homes at the beginning of these now, LOL)
He is probably talking about Indians or something. Student visa types.
