Road Trip: Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Vandenberg Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base located 9.2 miles northwest of Lompoc, California. It is under the jurisdiction of the 30th Space Wing, Air Force Space Command (AFSPC).

Vandenberg AFB is a Department of Defense space and missile testing base, with a mission of placing satellites into polar orbit from the West Coast using expendable boosters (Pegasus, Taurus, Minotaur, Atlas V, Delta IV and now SpaceX's Falcon). Wing personnel also support the Service's LGM-30G Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Evaluation program.

The host unit at Vandenberg AFB is the 30th Space Wing. The 30th SW is home to the Western Range, manages Department of Defense space and missile testing, and places satellites into near-polar orbits from the West Coast.

Wing personnel also support the Air Force's Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Test and Evaluation program. The Western Range begins at the coastal boundaries of Vandenberg and extends westward from the California coast to the Western Pacific, including sites in Hawaii. Operations involve dozens of federal and commercial interests.

The 30th Launch Group is responsible for booster and satellite technical oversight and launch processing activities to include launch, integration and test operations. The group consists of an integrated military, civilian and contractor team with more than 250 personnel directly supporting operations from the Western Range.

The 30th Operations Group provides the core capability for West Coast spacelift and range operations. Operations professionals are responsible for operating and maintaining the Western Range for spacelift, missile test launch, aeronautical and space surveillance missions.

Served at VBG on TDY as a member of a Minuteman launch team. We launched a package down range to the Marianas. The Russians were hovering around offshore, whose movements we had to watch and report, so there are some Russians who have their own memories of VBG as well.

Harper’s Ferry Area is terrific too!

Another wonderful ride is the “Colonial Triangle Parkway” in Virginia (Jamestown/Yorktown/Williamsburg), and a little know road that connects Williamsburg with Hampton Roads. Ft Eustice Military Transportation Museum, Carters Grove Plantation, Busch Gardens, The Mariners Museum, The Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the War Museum...all in one 20 mile road-trip!

In the early 80's I lived in Richmond. I took my eldest daughter around to all the battlefields of the Seven Days Before Richmond, where Robert E. Lee demonstrated that the North had the resources, but the South had the Generals.

I guess his name is mud at the service academies now - in that one series of engagements, he gave the Union Army the best schooling they ever got.

I love the ride from Richmond to DC...Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Courthouse...and The Wilderness (Shudder).

When I was working in Richmond, my then wife was having great difficulty during her pregnancy with our first son. We left Richmond - she and my daughter moved in with my parents in Maryland and I took a room in Richmond. I commuted between Richmond and Burtonsville, MD every weekend - usually down US 301 - much less traffic. Also Washington's Burgess Route and Patrick Henry's route to Williamsburg for the Burgesses - where he gave the immortal "Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death" speech.

I made it safely home and the predicted high winds have arrived. I think I’ve taken care of anything that can get blown away. Now my desktop computer has lost its wireless connection.

The good news, my laptop is fine. Going to reboot the desktop and reinstall the wireless if need be.

Good evening, Pro...((HUGS))...an expert...no, but she gets where she needs to go. Reggie is a lifesaver. I found some of that egg crate foam, so I’m going to put it on the chair back. It already has a few dings and a small tear. BUT I don’t care. It doesn’t have to look pretty, nor do the doors or door jambs. Reggie is keeping her engaged in life, engaged in her home.

Just had an idea....I might put a t-shirt on the chair back....that might help some as well.

I think everything is nailed down, but the lengthy gusts are kinda spooky.

Any critters on your commute these days?

I'm working 20-25 hours at an Albertsons Supermarket as a cashier, good job, easy job, nice fellow employees, and mostly nice customers.

Plus I get an employee discount on my groceries.
