Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater has been working the phones in recent days, telling Republicans activists and donors that he intends to run for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination and wants their support. With incubent Sen. Marco Rubio expected to announce his candidacy for president April 13, Atwater is gearing up for what could be a tough primary for a rare open senate seat.
Other Republican prospects include Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and U.S. Reps. Ron DeSantis,R- Ponte Vedra Beach.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy of Jupiter has already announced his candidacy.

I guess this means that Marco Rubio is in for President. Atwater will be tough for the ‘Rats to beat.
Rubio is an idiot to give up his Senate seat. He will not be nominated.
When he joined Schemer’s Gang to scheme against the citizens to “Comprehensively Screw Americans Out Of Their Country”, he pretty much burned that bridge.
I was hoping Atwater would run for Governor. He’s be a great candidate and would destroy anyone from the other team. He’s been a great CFO and has the perfect temperament to be a popular governor.
Adam Putnam will be Florida’s next Governor.
“Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater”
Poorly written article. What is he the CFO of?
Chief Financial Officer of Florida
Yeah, that doesn’t thrill me at all. I am sure he’s fine politically, but he doesn’t impress me as a candidate or spokesperson.
I agree, Rubio has no chance. He should keep his Senate seat and get behind Cruz early. He’s a destroyer not a creator. Especially being from Florida, his initial backing of Cruz would go against the GOPe and Bush. He doesn’t have the courage to do the right thing. He’ll be used to enter the election if his GOP seat can stay R and disrupt Cruz from the nomination. A Bush will never win another National election. Even though I’m from Texas and still do like George Bush, most Americans I feel are repulsed by the name. It’s an upside world we live in today.
Atwater is a very strong candidate, possibly he’ll do better against rat Patrick Murphy than Rubs would have done himself. A coup by the NRSC.
Both of his elections as CFO have been landslides, in this last one he took 59% and won every county but Gadsden (Majority Black), Leon (Tallahassee) Alachua (Gainesville), Broward, and Miami-Dade. Yes, Miami-Dade is now worse than Palm Beach.
I agree Rubs is foolish to give up his Senate seat. He chances of being on the ticket are extant (more likely as VP than P), but not particularly great.
I also agree that Putnam is the odds on favorite to be the next Governor.
Now here is some bad news, Jeff Atwater is NOT running for the Senate in Florida.

I won’t pretend that I’m not disappointed that Atwater won’t be running, but we have a strong bench in FL, and both DeSantis and Putnam would be great.
That likely means Atwater wants to be the next Governor. It may also mean that Rubio informed him privately that he might run for reelection, since he has yet to officially take himself out of the running (unfortunately). If Rubio does decide to not run for a 2nd term, both he and Gov. Scott may push for Lt Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera to do so. Avoiding an ugly internecine battle where the candidates deplete their $$ resources is important. Absent Atwater, I don’t have a particular favorite I’m leaning to, but it will be a closer race without him.
Well, Rubs is definitely out, running for President. Allegedly he won’t change his mind once he is eliminated early.
Good news.
With Rubio running for president and forgoing reelection, Congressman DeSantis is officially running for the Senate. He is a very smart and accomplished felloew and arguably the most conservative member of the Florida congressional delegation. I think that DeSantis would make a great Senator, and with Atwater out and Putnam reportedly more interested in the governorship I think that he might be our strongest general-election candidate as well.
“Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy of Jupiter has already announced his candidacy.”
That would explain the name, he picked one commonly used by democrat politicians. I would have guessed Uranus though, not Jupiter. ;p
Maybe Uranus, but not mine ....
LOL
Maybe Obama’s.
