The way I see it, the Russians have a peculiar type of cultural stupidity. Its like they think its their destiny to be ruled by serial tyrants. Who’s to argue with Russian people that know Russians, maybe he was justified.

Well, they wouldn’t be Russians if they weren’t actually the Russians, they are who they are, because of who and what they are as a people.

Liberals in general think that, in order to achieve the leftist communist utopia, there “will be some tough times” in the interim until the perfection is achieved.

But that perfection is SO worth the struggle to get there, that anything can be justified when weighed against it.

I’ve heard similar things about Mao from Chinese friends. It’s this mentality that explains why humanity has allowed so many sociopaths to rise to power. I personally believe it’s the same mentality that leads to the almost literal worship of celebrities - including those whose lives are essentially a disaster.

It's people thinking 1) "We were a superpower" and 2) "We won WWII."

It's not so much a rational, well-considered approval of what Stalin did, it's an angry reaction to Russia's loss of the power it once had.

This poll result indicates that those who voted do not know what life was like in the 20’s and 30’s in Russia. Or, they have not been told about or read “The Gulag Archipelago” by Alekzandr Solzhenitsyn. I have read all three volumes and each is filled with what life was like for those who even hinted at being dissenters. A.S. was given 8 years for writing to a fellow veteran that he did not think that Stalin's next “5 year plan” would succeed. I guess the “Black Marias”, the transports that whisked prisoners away in the dead of night, are no longer in use. Solzhenitsyn won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. (he deserved the prize, unlike Gore and p_resident Obadman.)

My co-worker in Seattle is a native Russian. She’s been here for over a decade.

Her political totalitarianism runs deep.

Russians seem to innately desire a maniacal boot crushing their head.

Poll: Nearly Half of Russians Believe Stalin’s Terror Was Justified

The other half were killed in "Uncle Joe's" purges.

Perhaps the north asian caucasoids we call russians have lived under the boot of repression and tyranny for so many countless centuries that it feels perfectly normal. Those who felt otherwise froze to death in Siberia or were shot in the basement of lubyanka prison.

As a former Soviet, I can say that this is mainly due to WWII. Stalin has almost godlike status and gets a free pass because they did not lose the War. Many also credit him for the soviet industrial revolution. The saying is “he was a really good piece of sh**”. I knew people who survived his starvation policies and said this.

Russians don’t like rules or authority or dictators. Except for publicly challenging the party, there are very few rules enforced for the average person.

White Sea Canal Construction 1933

The canal was constructed by forced labour of gulag inmates. During its construction by a total of 126,000 workers, about 12,000 died, according to the official records,[1] while historian Anne Applebaum's estimate is 25,000 deaths.
