Walmart's CEO is standing up against a religious freedom law that just landed on the governor's desk in Arkansas, home to the company's headquarters.
It's similar to the law Indiana adopted last week, which sparked outrage from those who say it opens the door for discrimination against gays and lesbians.
Walmart (WMT) CEO Doug McMillon asked Gov. Asa Hutchinson to veto the bill, which was approved by the Arkansas House on Tuesday.
The company is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. "Today's passage of HB1228 threatens to undermine the spirit of inclusion present throughout the state of Arkansas and does not reflect the values we proudly uphold," McMillon said in a statement.
It's not the only other state currently considering a religious freedom law. There are 14 other states looking at similar proposals this year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
A number of big companies have spoken out against the Indiana law, including Starbucks (SBUX), Apple (AAPL, Tech30), Angie's List (ANGI), Yelp (YELP), Salesforce (CRM, Tech30), and Eli Lilly (LLY). NASCAR, as well as the NCAA, NBA, WNBA, Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever have also expressed disappointment. And Connecticut banned all state-funded travel to Indiana over the law.

Yes we want to uphold the values of Arkansas but we dont want people to be able to act on those values without fear of retribution.
I,too wrote to NASCAR today and expect the same result. I wonder how many more seats they will have to remove, just so television will show full grandstands?
This is a 1st Amendment issue NOT religious.
Pence should have stated that and then we could see the progressives real desire for this country come to the surface!!!
America’s Oligarchs have spoken!
I went on their LINKEDIN account and posted that they are 1st amendment and Christian haters!!!
Judging by the half-empty grandstands at races over the last couple of years, I'd say that movement has already begun.
Those guys aren't racers anymore anyways. They're male models (Danica Patrick excluded) who drive slot cars without slots. They may as well have the spotters drive the cars by remote control.
Last week, Sam Hornish's spotter told him he was clear high so the idiot just moved up into another car as if he didn't have mirrors. Of course, on the way to the garage Hornish blamed his spotter.
This is what happens when you don’t show any resolve. When you retreat and look weak, they go for it all.
1) Bad credit..
or
2) No will power, a credit card would take complete control over them. Maybe cant say no to kids or partner who want stuff.
or
3) a spouse with #1 or #2
I once worked in materials department of a major refrigeration company, which served mainly WalMart.
When ordering parts for their units I was told to forget the price list for Walmart, as they tell US what they will pay, and that’s it. If we don’t concur, we could lose the Walmart account.
They do that to a lot of suppliers, so they’re a definite force in the marketplace, however, there is one thing they can’t do, and that’s to force people to shop there.
This company has ruined many small businesses throughout the USA. In our city, it became nearly a ghost town about a year after Walmart arrived. The local merchants just couldn’t compete.
Companies who get that big and cocky talk themselves into believing that they are an arm of the government.
Remember, Hillary used to be on their board of directors. That goes to their “judgment” and ideology.
I hope Arkansas doesn’t cave.
Sam Walton would be rolling over in his grave. He was a Christian.
RE: This company has ruined many small businesses throughout the USA. In our city, it became nearly a ghost town about a year after Walmart arrived.
CHINA is the biggest WalMart supplier.
Does China allow gay marriage?
Someone should ask Doug McMillon why his company does most of their business with the China, a country that discriminates and abuses human rights routinely.
Tell Walmart to pound sand.
The anti-Christian bigotry needs to be called out and we need to take the offensive.
I actually attended the Daytona 500 this year. They have greatly expanded the grandstands and continue to build more. Some of it is still under construction!
NASCAR seems to be out of touch with the market. In years past, you’d have to buy tickets months in advance. This year, I bought my tickets the day before! AND there are TV commercials now, trying to sell tickets. They never used to have commercials.
Sadly, the Christian community's resistance is limper than the wrists of those who attack it.
But WalMart? Their target consumer is not gay rights Nazis and the Starbucks crowd.
The money in NASCAR has ruined NASCAR. They are so involved with kowtowing to to sponsors that they have lost the people that put them up there. When Bristol has empty seats you know something is very wrong.
“and does not reflect the values we proudly uphold”
The value you proudly hold is sodomy.
So when is Asa supposed to sign the bill that he said he would sign; assuming he doesn’t get cold feet?
