Robert L. Hite, blindfolded by his captors, 1942
RIP Col. go with God.
We have to be getting down to the final raiders.
Last I heard there were only two or three left, and that was a couple of years ago.
Their are very few of Doolittles Raiders left any more.
I noticed my link is changed. Can I not post a link to Yahoo news with a given search parameter? Like this...
It looks as though there are three left.
It looks like the link gets changed in transit.
According to one source he was held captive for 40 months.
RIP Sir.
RIP.
Thank You, Sir.
May God Bless Your Immortal Soul.
We are down to just two then, Lt. Col. Richard Cole, and Staff Sgt. David Thatcher. We live just a few miles from where another Doolittle Raider, Lt. Col Ed Saylor lived. He died in January at the age of 94. We saw him last at the South Sound Ronald Reagan Republican Club meeting on November 11, 2014. At that time he was still walking without a cane and able to carry on a great conversation.
In June of 2013 I took video of a presentation Lt. Col Ed Saylor gave at the “Heritage Dinner” held at the Officer’s Club on McChord AFB at JBLM. He was still a very good speaker and gave us a wonderful talk.
Thanks for the post. Found a link. We owe a great deal to these heroes.
I forgot to mention that when we were talking to Ed Saylor in November, he mentioned that Col. Hite was in poor health. We were very surprised that Ed passed away in January because he indicated to us that he was doing pretty well, although his good friend Phil he brought him, told us that he had been under the weather.
But few as audacious as these flyers taking off in to the virtual unknown for primarily sending of a message - "we are at your door, Japan".
FDR announced that the planes had taken off from “Shangri-la”
What are they going to do with the bottle of cognac that was supposed to used by he last survivor to toast the others.
God rest you Col. Hite. May we as a nation be worthy of your legacy.
Thank you for your service, Col. Hite. If only our nation would honor your legacy by staying strong.
Godspeed, sir.
Lt. Col. Robert Hite - R I P
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
John Gillespie Magee
RIP LTC Hite. I think this leaves only 2 raiders alive.
