I was born Lew Alcindor. Now I’m Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The transition from Lew to Kareem was not merely a change in celebrity brand name — like Sean Combs to Puff Daddy to Diddy to P. Diddy — but a transformation of heart, mind and soul. I used to be Lew Alcindor, the pale reflection of what white America expected of me. Now I’m Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the manifestation of my African history, culture and beliefs.
For most people, converting from one religion to another is a private matter requiring intense scrutiny of one’s conscience. But when you’re famous, it becomes a public spectacle for one and all to debate. And when you convert to an unfamiliar or unpopular religion, it invites criticism of one’s intelligence, patriotism and sanity. I should know. Even though I became a Muslim more than 40 years ago, I’m still defending that choice.
I wasn’t exposed to many black role models. I admired Martin Luther King Jr. for his selfless courage and Shaft for kicking ass and getting the girl. Otherwise, the white public’s consensus seemed to be that blacks weren’t much good.
Much of my early awakening came from reading “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” as a freshman. I was riveted by Malcolm’s story of how he came to realize that he was the victim of institutional racism that had imprisoned him long before he landed in an actual prison. That’s exactly how I felt: imprisoned by an image of who I was supposed to be.

He’s a punk and I’ve had first person experience with that. About 10 years ago I use to drive a taxi in New York city and I picked up Mr. “Jabbar” up one day with his assistant. She sat in the front and he sat in the back with this big 2 liter bottle of water. So he asked me to take him to 125th and 5th avenue in Harlem. So off we go. When it came to celebrities I never gushed over them, I never “recognized” primarily because it’s embarrassing and 2nd because I really don’t give a damn if they have a better job than me that makes them a lot of money. So I should kiss their butt for it? Screw that. So off we go and his assistant is asking me about the traffic and blah blah blah and I notice Mr. Jabbar is giving me the evil eye in the rear view mirror. He wouldn’t stop staring at me. And I realized he was actually getting ticked off because I would not kiss the ring, I did gush over him. So finally I drop them off and a few minutes later I picked up this woman who refused to get in. Why? Because the lovely Mr. Jabbar decided to empty the entire 2 liter of water he had in his hand all over the back of my taxi and then leave the bottle behind. That’s Kareem Abdul Jabbar for you, another Muslim punk who reverts to revenge when he doesn’t get his way.

Nature abhors a vacuum. Something will fill that space. The left hopes it will be communism, but what’s to stop something like Islam?
I wonder if he did a DNA check how many traces of European blood he has in his veins, and how many different countries of Africa. He sold his soul. He is a slave now more than he EVER was. Allah will send him to do his jihad, and he will have to die... he will have to go to Mecca, go in circles around the black rock and chant death to the Jews. I’m not buying.
With islams image in the world right now it’s hard to believe anyone would convert other than to oppress, deceive, conquer, and kill.

Probably not in his case but at that time many converted and changed their name to avoid the draft.

I am a people watcher. I noticed for years that black people tend to go to the black identity section of a bookstore. Sure, I have seen exceptions, but this is overwhelmingly the case. This is a result of that narrow mindedness.
Sounds like he has black guilt real bad.
It is curious that any one group would gravitate towards somebody else telling them about their own “identity.”
And he did so in a country that does NOT practice sharia law......that makes a huge difference
