Questions about the religious background of Andreas Lubitz, the Germanwings pilot who investigators said deliberately crashed a plane in the French Alps this week, killing all on board, have sparked outrage and debate about whether such information is relevant to the investigation. When a reporter asked French Prosecutor Brice Robin of Marseille, during a news conference Thursday, whether he knew Lubitzs religion, Robin said he did not know and added, I dont think thats where the answer to this lies.
The question suggested that Lubitzs religious background was relevant to the investigation behind the pilots alleged deliberate downing of Germanwings Flight 9525 on Tuesday. Robin said the crash did not show any signs of terrorism. Some were appalled by the reporters inquiry.
This line of questioning makes no sense to me whatsoever, said Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, an associate professor of political science with a courtesy appointment in religious studies at Northwestern University in Illinois. I find it disturbing and depressing that at a time like this some people feel compelled to search desperately for explanations that presume religious causation.

Translation: He converted to Islam and we do not want to offend.
Pray America is waking
Religion and political ideology are functionally identical.
That was what I suspected as well, but it looks like he snapped after he was dumped by his girlfriend and grounded by his doctor.
I dont think thats where the answer to this lies.
Presuppositions will lead you down blind trails.
Makes a lot of sense to me, sweetheart.
1. Transparent bulletproof plastic or glass door? Why not make the cockpit door transparent so passengers and stewardesses can look into the cockpit, especially if they suspect that something was wrong in the cockpit?
2. Privacy: A curtain could be installed on the OUTSIDE of the door so that a stewardess could open the curtain to see what is going inside the cockpit.
3. Cam Camera: How about a cam camera in the cockpit? They make such cameras so small that they would hardly be noticed.
4. Cam Camera in passenger area: Also, how about cam cameras in several places in the PASSENGER area, and one especially aimed at cockpit area.
I am convinced if this guy were a member of the Westboro cult, the media would be running wild.
If he was a student at Liberty University, the press would be rejoicing.
A Muslim or an atheist will get kid glove treatment.
"These are not the droids you are looking for."
Is that so that those on the other side of the cockpit door can at least watch the pilot praying to allah (PissBUH) while the plane dives into the mountains?
Let’s see:
If a White cop shoots a Black suspect, the motivation is automatically “racism”, no matter the evidence of the suspect’s aggression.
But, when a Muslim purposely crashes a passenger plane, we’re wrong to believe his faith played a role in his motivation?
If people had been asking whether he was some “right-wing extremist”, no one would have been appalled.
Interviews with families and friends would seem to be a way to answer this question.
My understanding is that his Facebook pages have been cached. AFAIK, there was little or nothing in them to indicate conversion to Islam.
Anybody devout enough to kill himself and 150 others in the name of his faith is not likely to have kept his conversion secret.
Do you have evidence he was Muslim? Because I haven’t seen any, just a bunch of people leaping to that conclusion.
‘but it looks like he snapped after he was dumped by his girlfriend”
yes a weak minded young man, very little experience in aviation, some 600 hours of flight, wouldn’t cut it here in USA...would still be flying a Cessna150....
Really. Leftist university professors don’t seem to get the connection between religion and terrorism. How dense can you be.
There is no evidence this is connected to Islam. Get over it.
Lizzy Shakedown Hurd would be all over it if he were devout Christian.
If you do a google search, you’ll find there are Jews with the surname, Lubitz. Perhaps the officials do not want to go THERE.
