Gov. Walker’s Immigration Stance At Center Of Dispute
CBS DC ^ | 03/26/2015 | Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A dispute over Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s position on immigration erupted on Thursday, highlighting the Republican’s struggle to appeal to conservatives on the explosive issue as he prepares to launch a Republican presidential bid.

The two-term governor has consistently opposed what he calls “amnesty” for immigrants in the country illegally, but his definition of amnesty has evolved. In a recent closed-door meeting with top New Hampshire Republicans, Walker said such immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country legally.

His response:

"Scott Walker’s camp says he opposes ‘amnesty,’ blasts report

The Walker camp quickly countered that the story is erroneous.

“We strongly dispute this account,” said Kirsten Kukowski, a Walker spokesperson. “Governor Walker has been very clear that he does not support amnesty and believes that border security must be established and the rule of law must be followed.”

“His position has not changed, he does not support citizenship for illegal immigrants, and this story line is false,” Ms. Kukowski said."

I want a cartoon artist to depict the following to represent the Illegal immigration problem:

3 guys debating about what to do about a moderate leak in a HUGE damn that is obviously flooding a large city. Show the damn in the background leaking water. Show the 3 guys in the foreground with one pointing to the damn. One guys is suggesting that this is good for the soil and crops will grow. The second guy is suggesting they dig a big lake to hold the water and can grow fish to eat. The third guy is just pointing to the damn in the distance. On the sides, have a bunch of panicked construction workers ready to go to work. Obvioulsy make the guy pointing to the leak in the dyke look like the complete idiot and put a conservative tag on him. The other two should be a democrat and republican respectively.

Have fun.

Kirsten is being dishonest. The accusation isn’t citizenship, it is that they should be able to stay in country and work,

Every other GOP candidate, including Cruz is against deportations of all illegals. So what?

I didn’t realize Cruz was against deportation! Isn’t there anybody who is against America being invaded?

This is standard GOPSpeak, against amnesty but for sort of controlled/limited legalization, the details of which always end up ugly.

They see the electoral map and its not pretty.
Contrary to talk radio claims there's not much more left of the white over 50 turnout vote that was missed in 2012 to be turned out.

Its early and Walker will be pressed on this many times, hopefully sooner than later. I don't want to see him go the way of Romney.

They all need to be asked over and over sooner rather than later :" What exactly is your plan step by step for those here illegally regardless of how many years here and what age they were brought here?"

I don't see any of them volunteering a direct answer to that question.

““His position has not changed, he does not support citizenship for illegal immigrants, and this story line is false,” Ms. Kukowski said.”

The article said he supported legalization for illegals. It never claimed he said amnesty,it said that conservative activists believe that legalization is the same as amnesty.

This doesn’t look good for Walker. Amnesty is a deal-breaker for me.

The plan may be in some sense like the old Bracero Program although they are not giving specifics. The Dems won't like it though since they want new manufactured voters.

I think Cruz has been very clear on his stance. He says he will secure the border first and then we can talk about the illegals still here, but he also stated they will never have a path to citizenship and they will never be allowed to vote if they came here illegally. He is the only possible candidate that I believe will really follow through with securing the border.

I want an Eisenhower that will round up illegal aliens and dump them across the border. Cruz has not said the word deport. Anything less than deporting is amnesty and that is why I fear at the end, Cruz will settle on some form of amnesty.

Yes, sadly true. Those few who would enforce the laws fully and deport every single one of the immigration law breakers....those few are not running for president.

Every candidate is scared of the rich campaign contributors who of course need the cheap labor for their businesses.

In fairness the only difference between the presidential candidates is, some of them would put priority on closing the border. Others are soft on that issue.

Please name some important legislation Cruz has been able to pass in US congress which became law. Has he been successful in consensus building? Even if he becomes the president, he can’t pass a single law without majority of congress going along.

Executive orders are NOT permanent laws. Those can be nullified by the next president on first day in office.

It didn’t help he hired a pro-amnesty Liz Mair to be communications director, just a couple weeks after saying he was not for amnesty. The words and actions don’t reinforce each other. He’s too smart to make such a stupid mistake.
