HINO (CBSLA.com) Students at Chino High School returned to school this week to find that their chemistry teacher looked very different and had a new name: Amanda Swager.
Its just relaxing to be able to wake up in the morning and just be me, Swager told KCAL9s Crystal Cruz.
As Cruz reports, Swager grew up as a boy, Michael, but always knew there was something feminine about her. As an adult, she learned that she was actually genetically female and began transitioning.
I look at myself in the mirror and I go, I see a female body, she said.
Two years ago, Swager, 32, notified district leaders and planned on returning to school a woman after this summer.
But after being outed recently, she went public.
I was in a movie theater with my boyfriend, and some students walk in and start shooting pictures of me in a movie theater, she said.
Cruz reports that the school has updated its web page with Amandas photo and notified students and parents last week.
Even though Swager is happier than ever, shes heard some parents are concerned.
The big uproar was all about, You didnt notify us way ahead of time so we can talk to our kids and I said, Whats there to notify you about? If I was pregnant and had a miscarriage, I wouldnt notify you that I had a miscarriage. Its a personal issue, she said.
Sisters Jaylyn and Madison are OK with the teachers transition.
If its what she wants to do, I mean, Im not going to judge. Its what she wants to make her happy, Madison said. Swager said she is focused on doing her best job in classroom and is armed with and education to do so.
I have a chemistry major, physics major and music performance major, she said.
Meanwhile, Chino Valley Unified School District issued the following statement:
Chino High School is aware of the teachers decision. It is a personal and private matter for the teacher. Therefore, the school and/or district cannot comment further. Student learning continues to be our top priority and classroom instruction will continue as normal.
Um, wouldn't looking in the mirror give 'it' a clue?
My hometown where I lived from toddler to adolescent. Yuck!
Genetically “female?”
Uh.... I don’t think so. Sodomites lie. This is probably one of them.
If it’s actually a genetic / hermaphroditic condition, she has my sympathies and support. But self-deception does seem more likely.
“Um, wouldn’t looking in the mirror give ‘it’ a clue?”
Doesn’t the question really come down to the “Y” chromosome as to what sex a person is?
Oh no. You can’t trust reality because it doesn’t take emotion and feelings into account. Besides.....science
It's rare, but there are times when one's external sex characteristics do not "match" one's genetic makeup.
Are she and the boyfriend intimate? Has this person had the operation to make private parts conform to gender identity???
Just wondering ..........
I would think one would know when they realized they had female genitalia. Or am I missing something here?
Genetically female yet trying to live as a male is different that “feeling” you had the “wrong” body parts and seeking out a surgeon to perform an addadictomy or lopadickoffme. I feel for the former but have no sympathy for the mentally ill latter.
If there was any ambiguity he/she/it can always look in the genes/jeans...
She makes a more convincing looking female than a male. You go, girl.
She is one of the rare people who did not have the correct parts due to some genetic abnormality.
I can’t figure out from this article what’s going on. Does genetically female equate to anatomically female?
I’ve never heard of a XX-male before. I have heard of XY-females (androgen insensitivity syndrome).
I suspect it may have been a “voluntary” abnormality. Most such defects are dead before puberty.
According to wikipedia, XX-male syndrome affects four to five out of every 100,000. So, it's rare, but still probably 10,000-20,000 in the U.S.
The presence or lack of a schvantz should be a definite tell.
