Black actors and actresses are tired of being put in the entertainment ghetto, Dr. Boyce D. Watkins tells host Don Lemon While viewers were burning up social media about the explosive Empire season finale that aired Wednesday night on Fox, a heated debate was happening over on Don Lemons CNN Tonight. After showing a clip of the knock-down, drag-out, drink-throwing, weave-pulling catfight between Cookie and Anika, the conversation turned to whether the Fox hip-hop drama negatively portrays African-American culture.

I wonder what the viewer demographic stats look like.
Id guess that there are scant “regular” veiwers
Fox is particularly awful. It appears their goal is to coarsen and debauch anything they touch.
I hate the commercials for the show, so I know I wouldn’t watch it. However from the comercials, it totally looks like black stereotypes from start to finish.
More ‘Made for the Masses’ BS!
Unwatchable.
Ive seen neither the ads... nor the show...but I don’t doubt its trashiness given the few details Ive read
What’s an “African-American?” Many of these people don’t have any connection to the natives of Africa. Hell, many don’t know the FIRST THING about Africa. Would a white South African coming to America be known as an “African-American” too?
“the people’s tv ghetto”
I watched two episodes.
It is certainly a negative portrayal.
The question, really, is whether or not it is accurate.
I think it was Eric Bolling who said Empire is the first show since 1991 to increase viewership in each subsequent episode
This is I am gonna slap yo bitch ass because I am from the hood, Watkins insisted.

I teach in a predominantly Black High School (85% Black, 14% Latino and 1% White and Asian.) and I must say that the above statement is 100% correct. That IS most of this generation of Black America. It’s been “ghetto” for a long time. Now, it is gangsta/thug-ghetto. Fo sho bro.
Id guess that there are scant regular veiwers

Though I am not among them, you would be incorrect. For the last 3 weeks, it has been the most watched show in the 18-49 age bracket.
How can you coarsen and debauch hip hop?
You mean sorta like the viral videos we see week in & week out of Black Beastie Girls brawling it out.
the whole “African-American” fiasco is just that a FIASCO.
I have known precisely ONE actual African American....Originally.from Nigeria. He didnt refer to himself as an African-American
the headline reads in part....”Black Scholar on CNN “
so whats wrong with that “designation”???
You mean the African-American Africans?...................
yo yo rite awn...evidently!
Racist!
“How can you coarsen and debauch hip hop?”
If there is a way, Fox will find it.
