Scott Walker went to Iowa over the weekend and embraced the ethanol mandate a corporate welfare program that subsidizes corn farmers and ethanol producers at the expense of drivers, eaters, restaurants, and the environment.
As my colleague Phil Klein aptly put it, "if Scott Walker can't stand up to Iowans, how will he stand up to the Islamic State?"
Why do I assume this position was tailored to Iowa's caucus goers? Because Walker vehemently opposed the ethanol mandate back in 2006, actually standing out from the rest of Wisconsin's gubernatorial field in that regard.
From Milwaukee's Daily Reporter at the time:
"Currently, we have a problem with big government inMadison. On principle, I cannot support this proposal.
"It is clearto me that a big government mandate is not the way to support the farmers of thisstate," he continued. "Central planning will not help our family farmers, protect our environment or provide jobs. The free-enterprise system must driveinnovation to relieve our dependence on foreign oil, not mandates from the stateor federal government."
I've reached out to Walker's people for comment. I'll update when they respond.
Please explain what jobs you think corn farmers employ illegals to do.
You are going to confuse people with FACTS? How dare you!
Big difference than what you are claiming because once you take away the teat from the Corn-Welfare-Queens, many of them will not vote Conservative, because they are not Conservative to begin with.
A guarantee, though, is that ending the ethanol mandate will drastically reduce the hundreds of thousands of illegal invaders that work on these corn farms.
I am disappointed in his position in this area. But in the overall scheme of things, this is just one thing to consider in my overall evaluation of Walker as a candidate. This by itself would not be enough to sway me one way or another, and when balanced against what he has actually accomplished in Wisconsin is actually pretty minor in influencing my judgment of him.
Another point to remember is that his opposition to public employee unions was actually quite nuanced to enable him to pass the reforms he achieved. He was careful to go for the big fish while letting the little ones, the police and fire unions, off. That move enabled him to get elected and pass his massive reform policy. Looks to me like he’s just done the same thing with ethanol. Renaldus Magnus was willing to do the same kind of thing to advance his program. Indeed, so was Lincoln.
We have agricultural subsidies at the federal level that are huge, says Dr. Robert Peace, a professor of accounting at NC State and author of the paper. For example, corn is highly subsidized. Because of our subsidies, and the North American Free Trade Agreement, U.S. farmers can sell corn in Mexico cheaper than Mexican farmers can grow it. As a result, since farm workers cant make any money farming in Mexico, they come to the United States as migrant workers. Poverty fuels migration.
Better Enforcement of Existing Migrant Worker Protection Laws Needed
And if Cruz doesn't make it past Super Tuesday and Walker does, what will you do then?
You seriously think corn farmers employ migrant workers? Seriously?
Yes he was. Walker was against the mandate before he was for it. First time, he was against it to convince Wisconsin voters he was Conservative enough. The second time, he was for it to convince Iowan voters he would not mess with their corn kickback.
The islamic enclaves there would burn these kids alive in cages.
Does it bother you that the ethanol mandate is partly responsible for the millions of illegal invaders in America?
What amuses me about this is that some of you get mad when he changes his mind about something even when he changes it to a position you agree with! It is as if a candidate ever expressed an opinion or policy at any time with which you disagree, he is forever unacceptable as a candidate, even if he later changes his position to one with which you agree!
Anyone actually watching Walker instead of cherry picking secondhand news looking for gotchas would interpret this as Walker saying the ethanol subsidy should be gone but not immediately. Sometimes however Walker’s “not right away” has proven faster than any one thought. This is realistically characteristic of anyone riding a wave of political movement. He can’t really know where the wave wants to go and how fast or vigorously, until he is on it.
"An estimated 2,500 farms, orchards and nurseries in Iowa employ migrant and seasonal workers every year, according to Iowa Workforce Development."
Lying to win, although normal in today’s society, is nothing to be proud of. And all we end up with in office is...a liar. Just like all the other RINO backstabbers. They do the country - and the party - no good.
Those aren’t corn farmers.
Illegals in Iowa are mostly employed making sure the meat you eat is cheaper than it would be if companies could only hire citizens.
This is what i hate most about politicians, 50 year olds acting as if they never really thought about major issues and change with the wind and polls. They call it evolving and its either childishness or lying, and i think we know which is more likely
I would be willing to pay more for higher food prices, if it meant the removal of all the illegal invaders. The illegal invader destruction of our quality of life, in our neighborhoods, schools, place of employment, ect., has resulted in the rapid deterioration of the American dream for many American citizens, to especially include Black and Hispanic American Citizens. Please explain why you would be so willing to sacrifice a safe and secure America in exchange for cheap burgers?
